Rapid rear tire wear

The rear tires on my 2011 Savana 3500 are wearing very fast. without rotation, I could wear them out in 10,000 miles. Its been like this from day one. I currently have 36,000 miles on the van and have around 6000 miles on my 3rd set of tires (Cooper Discoverer AT3) The rears had less than 50% tread left when rotated last week. When compared to the fronts, the fronts have more than twice the tread depth of the rears. I took it to a local frame shop and it was checked for alignment, frame damage, axle damage, all were good. It was sugested that it might be the rear locker or the stabilitrak system. Has anyone else had this problem? Any sugestions on what could be wrong?

All sounds good there. The locker or stabilitrac will not wear tires. Hard to say without seeing van but i would suspect an alingment issue. Do they wear evenly across the tire? Or more choppy and feathered? Sounds like you have it all covered. Not sure what to think.

The tires wear smooth, no choppyness or toeing.I don't haul or overload. Alignment has been checked and confirmed by the frame shop as well as the dealer. Had the exact same setup on my 99 Savana without the excess rear tire wear. I've spoken with owners of other Savana's that dont have this problem. Everyones stumped.

I can't think of anything it would be... A locker or stabilitrac would have no effect on tire wear. What types of tires do you use? My vans are loaded contantly with about 1500 to 2000lbs and have 45k on Firestone transforce HT's and the others have hankook dynapros on them. Not the best performance but the life is great on them. Maybe you could change up your tire?

The originals were Bridgestone R265's I got about 16000 miles out of them. The second set were Mastercraft Courser HXT, I removed them at around 14,000, I could have gotten a couple thousand more out of them but winter was coming. I now have a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's with about 7,000 miles on them. When I rotated them a month ago the rears were well below 50% tread remaining and easily 50% less tread than the fronts

 

I run 80# in the rear and 50# in the front

 

My real question is why I'm wearing the rears so much faster than the fronts. I've never had anything, car or truck, that wore rears like this.

Out of curiosity I went out and checked the tread depth on my tires. The original tire tread depth was 16mm, the fronts before rotation have 11mm left, the rears have 5mm left. This tells me the rears are wearing out twice as fast as the fronts.

awdco56 - kind of late in the game, but if you have not already figured it out, it could be something simple like the valve stems. The interior component of the stem may need tightening, being lose will cause the tire to seep air resulting in premature tire wear. The faster the seep, the faster the wear. Check tire presure on all 4 tires twice a week to compare pressure loss

Thanks for the reply, tire pressure is good and remains consistent.

 

I've had several conversations with my dealer as well as GM customer care. So far the only thing the dealer has checked is alignment and brakes. both fine. The implication had been made that the truck is overloaded or I'm running non-spec tires,both of which have been dispelled. I requested they pull the cover on the axle to inspect for fragments or shavings that might show an axle problem. for some reason they're reluctant to do it unless I pay for it. I told them I wouldn't pay to have them trouble shoot their problem. I was then offered a $2000 discount toward the purchase of a new van. After Thanksgiving I'm to call the GM special service group to see what they will do to remedy the problem. In the mean time, I'm down another 2mm on my rear tires
