hole in muffler?

hey guys..

 

I was crawling under my truck earlier and noticed what appears to be a split seam on the back side of the muffler. is this some type of moisture drain? I've looked at a bunch of mufflers through the years and never noticed anything like this. I included a pic, its no the greatest..

 

it's covered in black soot..but it's there.

When I first got this truck I thought "ah crap...really?!?!" Then I went ahead and started the truck and happen to notice the condensation dripping out and I was, "hey, someone's thinking".

Strange. Every vehicle I've ever owned has had one, even a majority of the aftermarket exhausts do. If I had to guess I'd say it's just more noticeable since direct injection engines can release more soot than regular port injection so the blackening around the hole is more noticeable.

False. My Corsa muffler has one. The installation instructions even say to make sure you point the weep hole down so it can drain.

I stand corrected, it must be Borla then. I've owned Corsa and Borla so it's one of them.

Edit: all the Borla guys are running out to check and prove me wrong.

Those weep holes have cost the muffler companies a lot of money in lost sales. Without them the muffler quickly rots away from the inside out.

Yeah, I am sure it's Borla who doesn't put them in their mufflers. I wonder if the muffler on GM Borla system has a drainage hole?

guess I just never noticed. probably had 50+ different exhaust systems over the last 10 years

I had a Borla back on my 2002 silverado. I remember it had weep holes. That system looked great after 10 years with 100k plus miles on it. They might have changed their game a bit since then though.

Yeah maybe, if you google "Borla muffler no drain hole" people have complained about it.

 

Edit: from Borla "The majority of our exhaust systems do not require drain holes because they will not retain water" "Drain holes are usually only required for mufflers which are hollow or have hollow chambers where water can collect. Our mufflers on systems for the Silverados are fully packed and will not retain water. While there is water vapor in the exhaust gas, it will burn off and evaporate faster than it can collect."

yea i can see how these things save the mufflers. my corsa poors water out of the weep hole all the time when its idling.
