Silver Ice Metallic (or Quicksilver Metallic) paint issues

Recommended Posts

I posted about this in the "Silver Ice Metallic fans" thread a few weeks ago but didn't get any response so I thought I'd make a dedicated thread.

In a nutshell, my paint looks horrible. The hood has a very splotchy, faded appearance and this is carried over to the roof as well. I can also see a tiger-striped pattern in various other parts of the truck with alternating streaks of light and dark. It's almost as if the paint wasn't applied evenly or in a random pattern.

The problem is this is only noticeable in the right lighting conditions and sometimes hard to see. The hood and roof (biggest offenders), are most noticeable in full, direct sun while the other areas show up best in my garage.

I brought it to the service mgr's attention when the truck had less than 300 miles about a month ago and he looked at me like I had a third eye. Although he admitted he could see a small patch on the hood he said it looked beautiful to him. He recommended I take it to their certified body shop, which I did. The guy said he could definitely see the issue but said if it was him he would just live with it as it's never a good idea to paint a brand new truck. I really don't want to paint either but I don't think I can just live with this … drives me crazy every time I see the blotchiness and it's hard to feel good about my purchase.

As I see it, I have three options, none of which they've agreed to yet as I haven't pushed for anything.

1) Have them paint the entire truck. (least desirable in my mind)

2) Have them swap the hood out with one with better paint (I've seen other SIM trucks on their lot without the blotchiness), let them paint only the roof and just live with the rest. (not ideal IMO, but I think I could live with it)

3) Push them to swap out the truck for another color. (I've read this was done for others with the same issue) This would be my first choice option.

Am I the only one? Has anyone else with SIM (or QS) paint noticed this? More importantly, what would do?

Here's what the hood and roof looks like:

my vote is for option 3 first , then 2 down to # 1 being last . I wouldn't care for it at all , I paint them every day . There robot must have had a plugged nozzle in its arm on that job .

Just curious have you had the paint thickness checked?

Ryan

No, I haven't but that's probably a good idea. Are you thinking that maybe the truck has been repainted afterwards or simply the factory paint was applied unevenly under the clear? Could I have it checked at any body shop?

I'm definitely not liking the idea of having to paint a brand new truck but the hassle of battling GM for another truck isn't appealing either. Man, why didn't I go for white like I originally intended!

My thought would be thin spots not necessarily a repaint. A body shop hopefully has a paint thickness have to be able to check. This would be good data for your case especially if it actually is thin in the spots showing issues

I picked up my silver truck with paint defects that looks like someone took a penny and dug out holes of paint all over the hood, it was kind of hilarious that they even delivered to me in that condition. Long story short they swapped out the hood and i couldnt be happier.

Thanks for the info, Ryan.

Good that they took care of you. It's amazing what gets through quality control (both at the plant AND the dealerships)! In my dealer's defense, my paint issues aren't so obvious since it's only noticeable in the right light, but you'd think a huge corporation like GM would have ways of checking paint was applied properly!

Did they just swap the hood out for one on the lot or did they order a new hood?

Believe it or not, they just swapped it with another truck right on the lot. I was going to ask 'sooooo what about who ever buys that truck?' but its none of my business haha. I'm pretty anal when it comes to body work, so when i got the truck i definitely checked all the gaps and body lines with the swap and it was perfect.

Evidently you're right. Dealer just told me they won't swap the hoods because of the VIN mismatch. The service manager couldn't tell me where it's located but "thought" the hood VIN is under the insulation.

This sucks. I've been told my only option is to repaint. Does anyone know if fixing (repainting) GM's mess will show on a CARFAX?

I've had mine for five months and hand wash it about twice a month. I have never noticed one single flaw in my paint. In my attached photo you can see the reflection of clouds on my freshly washed hood, the paint is flawless. White would be my second color choice but I like silver better. There is no reason that the silver paint on your brand new truck should not be perfect. If you think that your paint is defective, it is. You would have to be blind or insane to be mistaken. If your dealership is being uncooperative you should talk to someone higher up in GM. Unfortunately, it is not unheard of for some dealerships, on occasion, to be disrespectful to customers that purchase brand new vehicles.
