2014 Silverado - TPMS and Kent-Moore EL-50448

My 2014 Silverado came with 22" SEY Chrome wheels and, of course, TPMS sensors. The Kent-Moore Reset tool works perfectly on these wheels/sensors.

Now, fast forward 6 months... I bought a set of 20" GM Silverado wheels (LT 5 spoke polished aluminum style) and Continental tires with factory TPMS. (for winter driving to save chromies from road salt).

After pulling the 22" wheels and swapping the new 20's I tried the TPMS reset procedure.

Nothing.

I put the truck in "TPMS Learn" mode and the horn honks twice, the left front turn signal glows bright indicating that I should apply the reset tool in that location... Nothing, at any wheel location.

One last thing. the sensors on the 22's "look" different that the one's on the 20's. The 22's have a metal shaft on the valve stem and the 20's have a black rubber shaft like a normal valve stem.

22's look like this:

20's look like this:

Is it possible that the Kent-Moore tool will program one but not the other???

Thanks!

The valve stem makes no difference in your situation. You might have the wrong sensors, where did you get them and what make and model are they. The Kent Moore tool only tells the sensors to wake up and tell your information to my truck, it does not program anything. If you bought the wheels and tires already mounted, maybe the sensors have been removed by the previous owner.

Also maybe the battery is dead or not installed on the tool. Have you used the tool before? Did it work on your old tires and wheels?

Brand new battery in the tool. Yes, it worked on the previous wheels. When I bought the wheels/tires from the previous owner, they only had 100 miles on them and he assured me the sensors were there. I should have asked if they were the OEM factory sensors.

Just curious. The spare set you bought, do they have the TPMS sensors still attached to the valve stems or is just the stem in the wheel, no sensor?

I can't be 100% sure, but I've know the previous owner for a long time... he told me they had sensors in them. I never thought about them being aftermarket sensors or no sensors at all!

I'm going in for my first "free" oil change tomorrow. I'm going to have the dealership try to program the sensors. If that doesn't work, I'll be giving the seller a call and find out what's going on with the TPMS.

Can we run these things without sensors or will you get a warning on the dic?

You get a DIC warning. You can dismiss it with the center "check mark" on the steering wheel controls, but the yellow TPMS light will stay on.

I can live with it for 4-5 months until spring when I swap wheels back to 22's.

That sucks. Sorry to hear you got screwed on the sensors. I read this with a little concern since I have a 2014 and already ordered the Kent-Moore tool. I just got it in the mail yesterday. I had my stock wheels and tires put on the truck for the winter last week and the local tire place couldn't reset the TPMS. Not sure if they just didn't know what they were doing. Guy said his tool only went up to 2013. He tried and said no go. Just as well, they were going to charge me $24 to do the relearn! The Kent-Moore tool worked great. Took less than 5 minutes.

Yeah, I guess you're never too young or old to get screwed.

But..... The Kent-Moore tool does work great, and I can use it on the Vette, Equinox and Silverado. Definitely worth having.

My tool only goes up to 2012 and I can still do 2015's and have. That shop guy must be a moron. The sensors only need to be activated and the tool will activate it using the 2010 setting.

I hear you. The Vette looks nice . My go fast car is a Dodge. I didn't read anything that makes me think the tool is GM only. So maybe it will work on the Challenger too. I don't have many pics, but of the few, this is one of my favorites. Taken by a co-worker into photography. Other than my permit hanging, it's a pretty cool when you consider it's out of a third floor window.

After learning more about the process, the more I figured he just didn't know how to put it in learn mode. He asked for the remote at one point, which for my truck isn't necessary so ...
