k1500 wandering..

Recommended Posts

on my 1996 chevy k1500 the steering seems to wander alot. iv replaced the tie rods, ball joints, idler and pitman arms. it wanders to the left fairly bad but if i hold the wheel to the right it drives straight down the road. my tires are wearing good and dont seem to be wearing abnormally. i am planning on getting the allignment checked soon but the shop here charges $90 for a 3 month allignment which to me seems pretty high to me, but maybe im wrong. i have had an alignmrnt done on it before but that was befor i had finished all those parts.

any other ideas? thanks

How many miles?

Get it aligned. If you still have some play, replace the steering box. My truck had no "return to center" I was always correcting going down the highway. I tried tightening up the steering box but that didn't help much. After the steering box replacement it drives like new. Original steering box lasted 180k!

If you do need a steering box there is no need to align again after steering box replacement just make sure the wheel is centered.

Good luck!

I'm curious if the alignment fixed your steering issue? I have something similar.

I've replaced the whole front and done an alignment. So I am wondering if it could be the steering box.

  • 1 month later...

I haven't been able to get it looked at or anything yet if been crazy busy with work. But I have noticed the power steering seems to be not working as good as it used to and the oil is full in it so that could be a factor too. I don't have a shop so I'll probably wait until it warms up some to get into it more unless it gets worse. But I'll post what I find
