Detroit Series 60 engines have used plastic oil pans for years

Yeah. Any idea what the failure rate is on those? Do they hold up pretty good? One thing I like about the LS V-8s is that (I think) the oil pan is a load bearing part that can support the engine weight. Is that true or am I dreaming?

now I can accept plastic Intake Manifolds and Valve covers, but a plastic oil pan is a little iffy; because Engine oil is at least 15 degrees hotter than coolant, and if the plastic isn't up to spec, you'll have Recalls up the Wazoo, and ford Replacing engines at GREAT Cost. and more than likely, Ford will price Replacement pans as if the were Gold Plated and Diamond Encrusted; because on a 2002 Explorer V6 that came through our shop, a Replacement Aluminum Upper pan (its a Cologne V6) was $300

Do you honestly think that Ford would use a plastic that can't withstand 250ish degree temps?

Guys, with all due respect and love for my sierra , they have been number 1 seller for long time now. So iam sure it's been tested to withstand the heat you talk about

Being the best seller doesn't prove anything. Just means they probably cut a hell of a lot more deals on their defective crappy trucks then the real automakers are willing to do.

Ford has shown time and time again that being number 1 doesn't mean they are infallible.

What is your definition of a "real automaker"?
