P0171 Clarification

Combahee

Question

I know there has been a lot of questions and answers about this trouble code along with P0174. In going through all of the information out there I find some things I'm not really understanding.

In the case of BOTH codes I can understand the intake air leak, MAF being dirty, fuel pump and air filter being dirty. Each of these things would affect the entire engine.

However if one is getting a single code such as P0171 which is ONE BANK only, how would the MAF cause this or a dirty filter?

GM has a bulletin about dirty injectors as well, but isn't this before the O2 sensors? Is it saying one cylinder is causing this, and wouldn't I get a misfire on that cylinder? So how would it set a code without a misfire code?

I've seen some talk about cold air being denser, but this is what the MAF does, measures air, so if that is what sets the code then the MAF is bad and shouldn't it set both codes? Both codes should come up.

Unfortunately I have a scan tool but not a scope to look at the fuel timing. Any way around this?

Is there a tech that can clarify some of this. I think too many of us are running around looking for things that sould only affect both banks, not just one.

Finally I commonly see a P0171 by itself and rarely a P0174 by itself in the forums, which is the other bank, any reason for this?

I have a 2008 with the 5.3 and truck seems to be running smoothly, no misfire, good idle and takes about 20 miutes to set the code. I can clear the code and another 20 minutes before the SES comes back on.

Is there anything in particular I should be looking at on my freeze frame data?

Thanks.
