10 Ply (LT) Ride Quality and MPG loss (Stop and Go Traffic)

Hi All,

I have a rather specific question I have that I would love some input on. I just purchased the Toyo Open Country AT2 in size 275-60-20. I love the ride quality but they look a little too skinny for my liking and I don't want to be riding on these for the next 50k miles looking at them and being disappointed. I have the 45 day or 500 mile no regrets warranty so I can take them back and swap for the next size up. These tires weigh in at 43lbs.

I work 4 miles from home and rarely get over 45mph and hit quite a few stop lights on the way. This is good because I only travel 8 miles a day so I save some money there on gas to possibly justify the loss of moving to the 10 ply tire. I am considering switching them for a 285-55-20 or 295-55-20 in the same tire. This would make the tire a little wider and a tad taller, which I can clear since I have a leveling kit (2014 Sierra). My question is, these tires weigh in around 59lbs since they are the extreme version. So I would be gaining 17lbs a corner which is quite a considerable amount. My other option would be to go with the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in a 305-55-20 (might be too wide) in the XL which is a P -rated extra load tire, weighing in at 49lbs.

Those of you that have upsized and went with a E load tire (bonus if its the Toyo Open Countr AT2) how much of a loss did you see in stop and go traffic, and how harsh is the ride?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can send my way!

When I increased the tire size and went to a E rated tire, the ride didn't change perceptibly. I'd say that is due to the taller sidewall which allows more cushion. City mileage dropped a couple mpg.

I stayed with a stock size, but went to 10 ply on my 2006 and didn't lose any economy. My E rated tires are about 13 pounds heavier a piece than the old ones, also more aggressive. My ride didn't change, other than that it feels more stable.

I went from the Wrangler SR-A 265-65R18 to E-range Hankook ATM RF10 in LT275-65R18. Ride is ever so slightly rougher, and the noise is a touch higher. On the other hand it feels like it handles noticeably better. As for mpg I was averaging right 18.0 mpg and the lie-o-meter has since dropped to 16.9. Keep in mind that is has gotten noticeably colder in my area right after I changed tires, and I have not bothered to try and get the system re-calibrated to accommodate the tire change.

In all I am very happy to have my LT tires and feel more comfortable driving the truck now that the SR-A's are gone.

I haven't yet. I am still running the 275-60-20 Toyos. Like them a lot but considering a new wheel/tire package here in the future.
