Puddle lamps and dome light jumper wire mod

Recommended Posts

I previously posted before that I don't really like the Vehicle Locator Lights setting in which all of the lights (headlights, tail lights, reverse lights, etc.) all come on at night when you unlock the doors, I don't like lighting up the whole area. So I have that setting turned off. But I wouldn't mind at least having the puddle lamps come on with the interior lights.

So I figured out the two wires for the dome light and puddle lamps in the BCM module, and just used a piece of wire (not a diode) to connect them together. They are both in Connector 7 (last plug on left) and terminal 1 is the dome light (gray wire) and terminal 8 is the puddle lamp (gray w/green stripe wire). I just stuck the wire in each terminal slot (I did the same thing for the reverse light/cargo light mod).

Now the mirror puddle lamps come on anytime I open the doors or unlock the truck.

I wish the settings would allow it to be customized. I would prefer to just have the LED DRLS, Reverse and puddle lamps come on when unlocking. I have an HID kit installed and I am not sure if the headlights coming on briefly will shorten the ballast life so I turned the feature off.

The reverse lights on when unlocking is annoying, I hate driving through parking lots and I think these GM car/truck owners are trying to back out into me.

So far I have not noticed any issues with this jumper wire mod.

It will shorten the life a little, but you're still talking a 2500+ hour system and bulbs are cheap

Did you splice the wire, or literally just stuck each end into the appropriate slot?

I just stuck each end into the slot. I used a single, solid type insulated wire. Stranded wire that you typically twist together (like speaker wire) is not as stiff and wants to bend as you push it into the slot.

This is great. I really would like to have just my mirror puddle lights and some supplemental under the body lights to come on instead of the headlights and reverse lights and such. Thanks for posting this.

I am curious if the puddle lamps come on whenever you turn on the dome lights with the center console switch? I would be worried that I would need to use the dome lights while driving, and accidentally activate my exterior lighting while driving down the road.

Inspired by cbsilv15 (for requesting to have Puddle Lamps on with the Dome Circuit), the Fog Lights with High Beam Thread, and Cargo/Bed with Reverse Light Diode Thread, I did the same with the Puddle Lamps on with Dome Light by using a Diode. Then I found this post.

Stripe on the diode towards the Puddle Lamp Circuit in the BCM. This is the far left X7 Connector in the BCM. Pin #1 is the Interior Lamp Control - Circuit # 157 (Thick Solid Grey Wire). Insert Diode here and with the stripe of the Diode facing Pin # 8 - Puddle Lamp Control - Circuit # 5996 (Grey/Light Green Stripe).

Puddle Lamps come on anytime the interior lights are on. Also controlled with the overhead switch.

I have a 2017 1500 and i added the to mirrors, i find it funny how GM cant come up with a way to do this instead of either have us figure out for our selfs, reiwire the entire vehicle for it or just have a extra wire in the tow mirror to do this.

My question is I've been coming across a lot of these forms and I have not found one post to help me hook up my puddle lights to my reverse lights I downloaded the wiring diagram from GM upfitters and I still cannot find any reverse wire inside the BCM I've only found the puddle light.

Can somebody tell me what wire the reverse lights on yhe bcm, the pin number and what block it is in so I can hook my puddle lights up.

Any help.would be appreciated

Just to be clear... you have Tow Mirrors already? And you want the Cargo Lamps (White LEDs on the front of the mirror) to come on in reverse? You say "Puddle Lamps" which are the lamps that are found on the smaller DL3 Mirror and shine down towards the ground. Does your Cargo Lamp on the Towing mirror come on when you press the Cargo light button on the instrument panel?

BTW - There is no Backup Lamp Circuit (Circuit #24) in the BCM, however, it is present in the X61A Junction Box. If you can answer the questions above, I can guide you in the right direction.

Yes I installed the tow mirrors with the LED lights.

Yes is does everything is functioning like it should if were from the factory. The only thing I would like to do is have the LEDs come on when I'm in reverse and possibly have them come on while using the key fob unlock lock function it just sucks trying to remember to hit the cargo light switch
