One of these may very well be my next truck as I am not impressed with any of the current 1/2 tons. All the BS they put into them and all 4 brands still get 17MPG average like my 15 year old suburban. I would not be a bit surprised to see 35 MPG with the baby Duramax. Plus it will have almost 100 more foot pounds of torque than my 5.3 which pulls heavy trailers just fine... But I drive unloaded 85% of the time so mileage matters at 25K miles per year.

Wasn't the 5.3 in your truck around 285hp and 330 ft lbs? That's only 39 ft lbs from the baby Dmax, not sure its enough to make up for the over 100 less hp than the 5.3 though. It certainly will get better fuel mileage though :driving:

The say the baby dmax will put out about 400 foot pounds with the U.S. truck tuning... but we'll see

The key factor is where the torque curve is. The 2.8L will outclass a 5.3L in that it reaches peak torque at 2000 RPM vs the 5.3L not getting there till 4200 RPM. Now, most folks drive up and down the road at 1800-2200 RPM most of the time. That is right where the 2.8L will yank the side of the barn down. Most folks don't normally run around, either just driving or pulling a trailer, at 4200 RPM.
