Exhuast options?

Recommended Posts

All I did was get everything from the muffler back taken out and added a Flowmaster Super 44 single in/dual out. I left all 3 cats alone. They didn't say anything about it when I took it in for the first oil change and tire rotation. The dealer will say to not mod anything (that's what my local dealer said anyways), but that's to save their asses. If you're scared then you might as well get the dealer to do it, but that means you'll have to pay for a kit which would cost more than a good shop can do, then you still have to pay the dealer the labor cost. I say as long as you don't touch the cats you'll be fine. To be honest, most kits are over priced anyways unless you can find one used or just 2nd hand. With a good shop they can make it exactly how you want it for a lot cheaper price.

As far as warranty, GM would have to prove that the muffler replacement caused the failure of the warrantied component of your vehicle. Highly unlikely that would happen! As SouthernSilveradoGuy85 said, just leave the cats alone.

Yea that's what my dealer said also cause of how the truck is tuned and changing flow and exhuast temps could set off a check engine code and come back on me for the mod. I don't want to mess with cats, even though the third one bothers me just cause it's there,I was just planing on something like southernsilverado guy done.i have had flowmaster before on previous trucks and loved the tone but never gained anything but sound. Any other suggestions? I been looking at magnaflow and borla.

As long as you don't mess with the cats then you won't get any lights coming on. I was worried that the 3rd cat may muffle the sound a little since it's pretty big around for a cat but it sounds great so I'm not worried about the 3rd cat. I believe you can remove the 3rd cat but you'd have to tune it so any lights won't come on, could be wrong on that part but I believe some people on here has done that.

SouthernsilveradoGuy85 did you have alil better throttle response after flowmaster install?

I'm sure it is, but I can't really tell so if it did it's not much. My ears can play tricks on me thinking that since it's much louder than it helped with throttle response lol. I do plan on putting an Airaid MIT ait intake tube on though while leaving everything else alone and I'm sure that would help throttle response some. But, these trucks are also drive by wire so it will still be a minor delay.

I don't know of even one person who has gotten a check engine light based on changing the muffler. Headers and cat delete? - a different story!

thanx for the quick replies. I was also planing on adding just the airaid tube. I've read good reviews on it with leaving stock air box but got to get my truck from sounding like a 4cyclinder Corolla first. Lol

Actually a 4 banger Corolla is louder lol. Stock exhaust is more like a Prius.

I didn't think changing muffler would.i have been researching since I got my truck and haven't read one thing about a code popping up.yea stock is horrible. The first week I cut off resonator and opened the muffler valve but didn't help much.

Exhaust won't void any warranty and if you're hoping that a muffler and CAI are going to give you more go, keep hoping.

i had a K&N intake kit on my old 98 (already had true dual exhaust) and it did make the throttle response better, not a lot but enough to feel it. You have to drive around for about 15 minutes for the computer to readjust the air/fuel mixture. I'm not saying I felt the extra roughly 5 hp it supposedly gave it, just that it seemed like since the intake system was a lot less restrictive and gave the air a direct route that it helped the throttle response. I've also read though that you won't feel anything with an air intake kit if you still have factory exhaust because it would be like taking a deep breath in and then taking a normal breath out.

The main reason I got it was because of the fact you can go 100,000 miles between cleanings of the K&N filter, but since the new paper filters they make now (like the one that comes stock on the 14s) can go 45,000 miles between replacing so I don't see a benefit of an aftermarket filter. That's why I plan on just the Airaid MIT tube to go between the stock air box and throttle body.

The third cat is not monitored, I don't see how hollowing it out would through a check engine light. This only works when you mess with the front two cats because they have a pre and post 02 sensors. The engine runs off the first sensor, and the second sensor is there to verify the cats are doing their job and adjust the engine fueling accordingly. That's why when in a tune for long tubes you just remove the check the second 02s make, so it will never know to perform that test and throw a code. What I see is them claiming if you have messed with the third cat is messing with emission equipment. They would have to either physically look, or stick a probe up the pipe to catch it, assuming the third cat is even there for idle emissions and not for when you are under load and revving the engine.
