New front end noise?

02suburbanZ71

Question

Recently i developed a whirling/ grinding noise while driving. It only does it going straight and it its totally random. It can do it slowing down or while speeding up and sometimes not at all. It seems to be coming from the front left but im not really sure. What should i check since it wont do it while turning

If they replaced the hubs and hub bearings is it possible i got bad parts installed? Because the grinding is intermittent like before on the front left. Like right when the truck shifts into 4th going about 30-40 mph you feel it grind up there then it slowly goes away [emoji23][emoji23]

Drove the car 60 miles to downtown chicago to tramcar transmission. They are the best shop in the chicagoland area. Went on a test drive. We both drove and he noticed something too in the front. He said it sounded like the front diff was loose or front diff had play. How is this related to a grind whirl noise only in 4th gear? They are going to investigate and call me this week

Dealers around here get close to $100 an hour ... so that I doubt.

New info. It continues to make a slight grind/whirl (most people wouldn't notice it) from the front end once it goes into 4th. Does the same thing in 4 hi. BUT when i leave it in 2nd gear and go over 40+ mph NO grind or bind at all. What do u think for me its clear as day in the pedal

Looks like you have the same exact axle leak that mine developed at less than 50k miles. I haven't fixed that yet though. So far it's holding up ... knock on wood ...

I'd jack that thing up and check EVERYTHING underneath steering related. Could just be a bad CV joint, but check it all out anyway. I've seen improperly tightened caliper bolts back out and make a noise like that - caliper grinding into the wheel, on a vehicle this guy was trying to dump off on my buddy, LOL.

Hopefully i can take it to the repair shop tomorrow. I cant stand to drive it with such a noise. Is that diff fluid leaking?

They used to be. These days they're hit or miss. They're about the best out there though. That's the state of affairs today regarding any manufactured goods ...

The shop said they inspected everything and all was perfect but now i have a problem. I now have a metallic noise coming from the front pass side where they worked, that was not present before they replaced the hubs and bearings. Also i still have a little bit of whirring on the driver front most of it is gone not all though. Do i take it back? I am not happy. As the speed increases the metallic noise gets louder

Guys i am desperate for help. After 2 days i finally got the truck back. They said they checked everything. They took it on 4 test drives, 2 of them they felt and heard what i am experiencing. They cannot find what is making it and said the vehicle is perfectly fine. They checked the whole front end and under vehicle. New hubs, abs sensors and bearings. When i first noticed this issue it was right after i had the same shop remove and reset my throttle body and check for vac leaks and intake leaks, they did fix multiple leaks. When i get my grinding it is always only when the vehicle shifts right into 4th gear about 1-2K rpms. I feel it in the pedal and hear it. It sounds and feels like front left because you cannot feel or hear it in passenger seat. My dad test drove it and noticed it too but only driving and not in the pass seat. They said i have no mechanical issues whatsoever and that its probably tire related. Since it only does it accelerating 40-45 right when it goes into 4th its the trans or tcase. Something that came across my mind was the engine like an intake leak or some type of engine leak because it didnt occur until they fixed these problems. Any info you can post or just ideas of things to check will help. Could it really be the tires, i mean it only does it going into 4th. I cant stand this i spent too much $ trying to fix the problem. Please help me

Just going by their track record, it's probably one or both hub bearings. I'd change both.

My truck has 72k on her now. I bought I set of upper control arms and a pair of hub bearings last winter, because with my lowers failing at 38k miles, I knew it was just a matter of time.

Threw my winter wheel/tire combo on a couple weeks back, and guess what? Yep - uppers are SMOKED. :nonod:

Wow talk about bad luck. I think mine may have to go in for service.

Well I'm seeing 2 things in that pic - maybe a small drip on the power steering return hose, and the telltale spray of gear oil getting flung from the spinning CV - makes a straight line of oil on the frame. Mine has much more play than I would expect to be normal, so that probably wiped out the seal.
