Fair Price for 2004 Silverado With Bad Tranny

Recommended Posts

A guy I work with just had the tranny go out in his 2004 Silverado Ex cab, 4x4. Looking to see your opinions on what a fair price to buy the truck as is would be. He is not sure if he wants to have it fixxed, he doesn't work on vehicles.

Its 5.3 4x4 ex cab. 180k Runs good. BAD TRANNY. Rough shape, rocker and cab corner rust through. Good size dents, dirty. Looking for something to do in the garage this winter, and making it my work truck. Thought about picking it up if the price is right. Sorry no pics.

Any guess on a fair price for this?

To get the trans pulled, fixed and reinstalled will run you 2000-3000. Then you still have a rusted up, beat up, 180k truck, so 2k is not a bad offer. Also with 180k the other stuff needs replacing, water pump, belts, hoses, alternator. Just something to think about.

2000 is ok but I'd start at 1500... Remember the trans alone assuming you get a new one could be 2 to 3k.. And If the body's that rusty Im sure there's other things that are shot too.. To repair the rust right isn't cheap... Maybe be a better idea to just pay a little more for a truck that's in better conditon... A member on here darylz71 picked up a clean 06 with like 200k on that he's been restoring.. Truck wasn't in bad shape to begin with!

Wait, dirty as well? So even if he can't or won't do basic maintenance he doesn't even keep it somewhat clean? I'd be wondering what else hasn't been kept up on. Say how many times the oil changes went way over... if proper fluids were used/etc....

BTW, I don't count covered in mud/cow sh** as 'dirty' so maybe we aren't talking the same level of 'dirty' lol

^ Dirty as in needs a full interior detail. Nothing major, just dirty.

He's still unsure on what hes wanting to do. I have a 2 post lift at the house and I think hes really leaning towards me swapping the trans. The more I think about it the more im not in the mood to swap a tranny right now, lol. His wifes 2010 LTZ Crew is getting ready to be down for a few days at the dealer.

I want my 05 back so bad, had it just shy of 8 years. Never sat one day in any shop. Best vehicle I had ever owned. Should have never used it for trade on my 14.

^ Crazy as it is, you're not the first person I've heard say that. Why do so many people want their archaic, outdated trucks back? :jester:

I bet you could find some poor sucker with a clean, low mile ~2005 who would swap pickups with you.

Because they actually work, lol. I got the 2014, 2 months ago and nothing but problems, I have a thread about in another section.

Your 06 in your signature looks great by the way!!!

Thank you for the compliment!

I have read a lot of threads about the new trucks' issues, I realize many are trouble free, but there are a lot of complaints.

I'm happy with my pickup and I'll keep it as long as I'm able to. I almost wish I had another that was beat up to use for dirty stuff. I think if you could get this one for cheap it would be great for that. It's nice to have one you don't have to worry about scratching or mutilating.
