Installing aftermarket cam

Recommended Posts

I have the 4.8 and got my cam kit and ready to install. What is all required to replace when putting a bigger cam in?? I got springs, retainers and keepers. As far as sensors and programming go does anything else have to be done? Thanks in advance.

Lifters. Go with comp or Brian Tooley Racing. DO NOT use the LS7 lifters. They are a direct replacement but have a fairly high failure rate. Get ahold of a push rod measuring tool. Use it and order the correct length pushrods. Then get a custom tune because the computer needs to know what to do in reaction to the cam. You should also get a new torque converter. Most cams have a higher rev range. Talknto the cam company, tuner, and torque converter company to get the right stall speed. Newer computer controled engines need everything right so it all works together.

If you have roller lifters there is no need for new lifters. Do you know if your heads can handle the lift of the cam?

If it is apart it is good to change the lifters and lifter buckets. Why go through doing all the other work and leave the old lifter that could fail later down the road and wipe out a lobe on the new cam
