Lock up yer spare tires folks...

So I drove my truck downtown Chicago this weekend and parked in a lot that i have parked in numerous times before.

When I got back to my truck today the spare tire winch cable was cut and the spare tire was gone. I noticed that the holder that attaches to the winch cable was lying on the ground. At first I didn't know what the heck it was, then it dawned on me. Looked under the bed and sure enough, spare tire is gone.

Bastards.

I'm glad they didnt take my tailgate, and brand new extang cover. Thank god I locked the tailgate. Sometimes I forget. Now more than ever I want to the the locking tailgate mod that locks it with all the doors.

So anyone know what a spare tire/wheel combo costs? How about a replacement winch? How about something that I can use the lock it to the truck, like a cable or something?

Some bastard keep stealing my center caps in my work parking garage, I've already purchsed 6 from the dealer and they stole two on my Monday back from Thanksgiving. If I could only catch them, but then I'd go to jail, :nonod: Was it a match to your other 4? If so that sucks even more. Good luck and hope CARMA come back to these punks!

The lock in the hole does nothing, like people have figured out they'll just cut the cable. You can get a cable lock and loop it around the crossmember the winch is on, but chances are they'll just cut that too.

For me the best solution was to chain and lock it in the bed. I just removed the winch. I drive on lots of dirt so the tire would collect mud and rocks as well. It's also a lot easier to check the spare's pressure in the bed.

I'd set up a game camera or something along those lines.

My LTZ has a lock in the hole you put the rod in to lower the tire. same key as ignition. not sure if it can be added to a truck without one.

ive got the locked spare tire too.

next summer im going to pull it out and grease up the cable, ive heard they sometimes rust out and the spare just falls off.

Sorry to here that. Chicago area is terrible for that. We have a plant in Chicago, every truck owner backs over a curb to protect there spare or locks it in the bed. Many have been stolen during mid day.
