A few minor problems with my just-picked-up 2015

Recommended Posts

I'm now road-testing my newly picked up 2015 Silverado. I noticed a couple things that I wanted to see if anyone else had any experiences with:

Spongy brake pedal - Seems like there might be some air in the lines, but the brakes don't stop anywhere near like my 2012 did. If I put enough pressure on the brakes in my 2012 I could eat the steering wheel, but in this truck that stopping power seems non-existent. I also notice when stopped the brake pedal has sponge to it when fully pressed, almost a full inch, which feels symptomatically like air in the lines somewhere. The dealership accessories guy said he didn't notice anything abnormal when he pulled it in to do my mudguards today. It has almost 200 miles on it, and I tried the standard bedding procedure to see if that would help. It didn't. (If this helps, they are the adjustable pedals)

Front parking assist phantom alert - Every time I come to a stop whether something is in front of me or not, my seat vibrates and the info screen on my dash has all the forwards assist bars lit (but not the sides). Is this normal? There's times where I'm coming up to a car in front of me (but still at least 4 feet away), and times when it's clear (stop sign, red light, etc.) and it sets off the same way every time. I'm wondering if the sensor is defective or if this is normal behavior. If it's normal this is REAL annoying. If it helps I will take a picture of the dash next time I go out.

Thanks in advance, your input helps me know what to push back on my dealer and what to assume is "normal".

I don't know about the brakes, but I had the same issue with the front parking assist alert upon delivery of my 2014 Silverado LTZ. I took it back to the dealer a day later and they found that the front parking assist wiring harness (under the front bumper) was not plugged in! It took 5 minutes to fix and never had an issue since. Amazing that I didn't notice during the test drive nor was it discovered during make ready...

The brakes shouldn't feel that way. Mine were exactly how they should be and they've broken in so they feel more normal. I was so used to the sh*tty brakes on my 98 that for the first week (until I got used to it) of having my '14 I'm surprised I didn't get whiplash lol. So you need to take it in for that.

As for the parking assist, I don't have it on mine and never had it on anything else so can't answer that. But not being plugged in is probably what it is, or something is just loose. That's the bad thing about having all these wires and electronic stuff on a vehicle.

If the brakes don't feel right, take it back. Maybe ask to drive another 15 on their lot to do a comparison?

Front sensors are finicky. They will get dirty very easy, and will give false alerts in the rain and snow from my experience. I keep a box of wipes in the truck and give them a quick clean before starting my day. They don't like bull bars either in case you have one.

Again, if their clean and nothing bloccking, take it back.

Enjoy your new truck.

I would quote everyone but it seems I got a lot of the same feedback.

The front parking sensor was dirty at first, but my dealership washed and cleaned the truck so they were clean after that and continued to exhibit that problem. I'm going to head out in a minute and I'll snap a pic on my phone.

The brakes absolutely are NOT what my 2012 LTZ was, and that truck was a fully loaded model just like this one. Only difference was that was an Extended cab (I can't see it being THAT big of a weight difference), and those model trucks had disc/drum. I'd be surprised if I was also unable to set off the ABS intentionally, that's how sluggish they are. If others are saying they have snappy brakes it's going back in.

Fourth time is the charm! LOL, although this is the first appointment there that wasn't for an install.

Well, just an update, I brought the truck to the dealership and did a ride-along while they tested the brakes. Even though the advisor could squish the brakes halfway to the floor at a standstill, they claim that's "perfectly normal" and "just like every other truck they see"... either I got corvette brakes on my last truck by accident (I bought it brand new, so I sure didn't change them!), or someone is giving me the brush-off.

Apparently these trucks have all sorts of "intelligent" brake assist systems that "smooth out your braking". That's about the last thing I want to hear. My brakes should be able to unleash full capacity braking at a second's notice. So I have an additional appointment tonight for them to "go over the truck". Wanna guess how that will pan out?

PS: The front parking assist system has now completely quit the job. It doesn't beep anymore, even when it should.

Your peddle feel is the same as my 98 was. But I was never sure if that's how they were supposed to be. On my '14 they're the way they should be and not feel spongy or anything like that. I almost got whiplash going from my 98 to this one lol. Took a good week or 2 to get used to it and for them to break in. Go to a different dealer or if there isn't another one close then talk to the one in charge and tell them you know they're not supposed to feel like that. Then ask to test drive another '14 or '15 to show them your's isn't right.

Yeah, I know something is up here, but the service dept didn't have access to the keys of any new trucks on the lot. If I have to, I'll make them get some tonight. The more people tell me that there should be more to it, the less excuses I want out of the service dept.

I also went over every single GM TechLink bulletin I could find on these trucks with nothing of note for the braking system.

I feel like my 2014 brakes are adequate, but I did notice a difference from my 2011 to my 2014. The 2011 seemed like it took less pedal effort to stop, and like it would stop more quickly than the 2014. Again, the 2014 is adequate, but I was always impressed with the brakes on my 2011.
