Bad grind when engaging/disengaging 4x4

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado 1500 auto trans with a manual floor shift 4x4.

The truck has sat in a garage a decent amount during its life. Odometer: 124000

Started it up today and while in Neutral I shifted into 4Lo in order to get out of my driveway. It seemed to engage fine this time (it hasn't always been a smooth shift before). When I wanted to shift into 2wd I came a stop and put the column in Neutral.

Tried to shift from 4Lo to 2 and a very noticeable grind sounded so I didn't push it into 2wd. Now sitting in neutral, both on the column and the floor shift, I tried shifting into Park on the column. A different, smaller grind sounded and my speedometer made a jump up to about 15mph, although the pickup stayed stationary. Again, I tried to shift the floor into 2wd and was stopped by the grind. The grind could be felt on the shift lever, same as before. So with the floor still in N I moved the column from Park to Neutral, accompanied by another small grind and speedometer burst. Shifting floor from N to 2wd went fine this time, no grind or extra push required. Threw it in Reverse just long enough for it to engage, then back into Drive and it drove in 2wd like nothing ever happened.

I'm hoping its an easy fix, as I am unsure when the transfer case or transmission was last serviced. What should my next steps be?

Thank you for any help

First of all putting a transmission in park while t case is in neutral is wrong so don't do that , sounds like it's gonna blow up ,

2nd , you can shift a manual tcase with engine off with no drivetrain strain .

Your whole post is rather confusing .,

T cases, transmissions cannot be diagnosed over the Internet , if you want it to come apart , a tech will inspect and provide you with an estimate ,

Sorry but that's how it's done

I always turn the engine off and put trans in neutral(keep my foot on the brake of course :) ) when going into or out of 4l then into 2h.Remember there are spinning gears in there am pretty sure there are no synchros.

Newer trucks late (GMT400) with push button 4wd can shift in and out of 2hi / 4hi at any speed. To shift into 4lo I come to a stop, shift transmission into neutral, and press the 4lo button. Everytime i shift into 4-low I hear a loud CLUNK and its good to go. I guess this is normal? I've recently switched to Redline synthetic in transferase, both diffs, and transmission. Picked up 1 mpg but didn't make the clunk any quieter LOL
