I had a thought at a car show last year: The arm rest on the 2014 gm/chev trucks with a bench seat seems to have a spot perfect for a M14 mag. I recently got around to investigating further:

Not only does the center cell phone holder hold one, but right in front of it holds 3 more! 4 mags in an easy to grab location!

Too bad i didn't have my m14 set up for last hunting season.

Reminds me of that pic I saw awhile back when a cop pulled over an old woman and he found about 3 handguns in the car. The cop asked her what she's so afraid of and she answered "not a damn thing" lol. I used to use those slots for my cell phone but it kept tipping over. Haven't tried it with my current phone which I have an Otterbox case so maybe it will stay better, but I doubt it.

That may seem 'cool' to some people, and your buddies may be impressed, but it's not a good idea and may be asking for trouble. Any encounter with law enforcement, you may have some explaining to do. While it is your right to have them, it's just not common practice to carry that way and history has shown when there is LE contact and things like that are discovered, it's usually because the person in possession is up to no good. Expect to be detained until officers make sure you are squared away.

If you don't mind, what's the point having them there and why not just carry a pistol like a normal person? A rifle is a terrible choice for use as a personal carry weapon. It's extremely difficult to maneuver any type of long gun inside a vehicle, especially something the size of an M14. It's also not practical.

I use a Colt M4 Commando (RO935) with 11.5" barrel for duty and it's difficult to use from inside the vehicles, even with extensive training it still a little difficult.

If you do choose to do that regularly, hope everything works out for you. Just remember, you should never leave a firearm unattended inside a vehicle, that goes for loaded magazines as well. Unless you plan on slinging that M14 over your shoulder each time thou exit the vehicle, leave it at home and get yourself a pistol and some training.

Just a guess but I think the OP intended this as a "hey look at this" sorta thing and not something they probably drive around with.

Yeah I am sure the OP is just saying hey these fit here...

I am on board with a rifle in the truck, just not one that long. A nice 300 blk at about 8.5" should do the trick. Need longer range, well go with a shorty 10.

Right now I have a Glock 19, some don't like 9mm for protection but it will do the trick. I need to get my CCW so it's not just a range gun. I want other handguns but the Glock will be my carry gun whenever I get a CCW. I know I can open carry without one but I don't want to get hassled about it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 9mm. With the current ballistics due to advances in bullet making, it tests really close to the larger caliber cartriges like the .45ACP that most praise.

We are actually in the process of switching from the .40S&W back to the 9mm due to control while shooting and magazine capacity. The FBI testing shows there is no real advantage to continue carrying the larger calibers for duty pistols.

Many will tell you that being shot by a 9mm will not stop a criminal/threat, they are both uneducated, and full of shi*. Years ago, when first starting on the job, I used to be in the .40S&W caliber or larger crowd but then I was educated. I have personally witnessed much of the FBI testing used to compare calibers and I became an instant believer in the smaller calibers.

Don't be worried about being out gunned while carrying a 9mm pistol. There is plenty of power to stop a threat and protect yourself. The smaller .380 is making a comeback due to the advanced technology used to manufacture bullets and the results of testing. Just get yourself a good personal protection round and you will be fine. Don't be one of those cheap FMJ carrying guys, your life and the life of your family is not worth the couple dollars saved.

I've seen tests done. I know the 9mm isn't as powerful, but like I said it still does the job. Plus I have hollow point for protection so that will enlarge the area. I've also read that more 9mm than any other round is involved in homicides. I got a 9mm as my first handgun so it would be easier to get used to firing a handgun. The good thing about 9mm is that you have more chances since if your life is in danger you don't have time aim like you can at the range. Again I do want to get at least one 40S&W (probably S&W M&P 40 full size) and at least 1 45ACP (Kimber 1911) but those would be more of range guns and home protection. When I get my CCW I plan on using my Glock.

Old thread now, but let me clarify; I was just saying that the console appears to be designed to hold the mags. I do not, and have not driven like that.

I agree, the M14 would not be a great vehicle defense gun. I do have a "shorty" with an 18" barrel, but it would still be too unruly in a truck cab.

Furthermore, I live in Canada, where it is highly illegal to defend yourself with a firearm. Why don't I "just carry a pistol like a normal person"? I can take restricted firearms (handguns) from my house to an approved gun range or gunsmith while taking the most direct route. I could be arrested for stopping for groceries on the way home. Nope, can't carry a pistol up here.

The only issue I have ever had with LEO's and larger capacity side arms is that when many LEO's get into a scrap, they just don't know how to control their fire. They have a "spray and pray" mindset. Example is a shoot out I read of recently, not sure the town but think it was NYC. The bad boy did take some shots at them, but they unloaded something like 78 rounds at this guy with 23 impacts. That clearly shows a lack of serious training while under pressure and serious incompetence. Reminds me of why I would have to force FNG's to stay off rock and roll with their M-16's back in the day, as they would just rip off a full mag because they couldn't get their finger off the trigger in a fight from fear.

But it is true, a competent shooter that knows what he is doing is very effective with the 9. Not my preference, but it does do the job. Even a very competent shooter with an old .38 wheel gun can be very formidable. The key with any side arm is practice, practice, practice.
