Why is the HP Rating on the 6.0 Gas Different From 2500 vs 3500 ?

Recommended Posts

According to GM 2015

the 2500 HD 6.0 Gas is 360 HP & 380 Torque

and

the 3500 HD 6.0 Gas is 322 HP & 380 Torque

What's up with that ? Related to Fuel Injection / Timing / Tranny ?

Is the motor mechanicals all the same ?

Horsepower (hp / kW @ rpm):

360 / 268 @ 5400 (2500HD)

322 / 240 @ 4400 (3500HD)

397 / 296 @ 3000

Torque (lb-ft / Nm @ rpm):

380 / 515 @ 4200 (2500HD & 3500 HD)

765 / 1037 @ 1600

It doesn't make much sense to me either. They seem to always lower the horsepower in 3500, 4500, 5500 trucks because it puts less stress on the engine? That's what i've heard. To me that's where you need the HP!?

From the looks of it, it's the same engine, they just quoted the HP at a lower RPM. From a usage standpoint, this would make sense as it would be a value closer to what the owner would actually see, IE, you don't see many owners of gas 3500's driving around revving the piss out of the engine every chance they get.

They're the same engine and produce the same power. It has something to do with EPA/USDOT regulations and certifying a CMV (GVWR over 10,001lbs) and the amount of noise it can produce at "peak" power.

Your government hard at work to keep us safe.

Sure the 6.0 is outdated compared to the competition. Really didn't think i'd fall in love with this motor from having a V-10 Ford and Duramax in the past... But it really is a good, smooth engine! It gets the job done. Really digging the 6.0 with 4.10s. Also that 6.0 rumble sounds soooo sweet!

Yeah the 4:10's really help it. My dad's 2015 with the 6.0 has plenty of nuts...especially compared to my truck...which is a turd. And yes, the 6.0 factory exhaust sounds really good.

Yes - my 6.0 stock has a great low rumble at idle, & sounds better better than amy 02 stock Vette

Yep, I imagine so. Stock Vettes are pretty quiet. The factory exhaust on my dad's 6.0 sounds better than my 5.3 with a GMPP muffler, haha.
