With all the options available today, I still can't find a truck t

Recommended Posts

Bleh.

Not a single truck currently offered in GMs lineup sits well with me.

My needs are stone cold reliability, first and foremost. I have, and currently own a 2006 5.3, which has been as close to flawless as a vehicle could be. 126k,and I have changed oil, brakes, and 1 battery. Thats it. Im staying with Gm.

I pull/tow a few trailers from time to time. One is 3500lbs,the other is close to 9500. Dont pull them daily, more of, 2x a month thing. I

So, im right on the edge where a 1/2-ton gasser could fit the bill, but a 3/4ton would do it with ease.

This truck will also be my DD, but my drive to work is only 8mi,one way, so mpg isnt a deal breaker regardless

Now, for my options.

If I do go half ton, it will be the new 6.2/8spd combo.

Downside, is thats its largely unproven, and the cost is pretty high for a half ton.

2. 6.0 3/4ton. 6.0 is notoriously reliable. So, thats a +. Downside is obviously the mpg, and power. Though, compared to the diesel, it scores high for being simple, and cheap to maintain, and supposedly the new 6-speed trans is much better than the older 4spd in terms of pulling, and mpg.

Likely the cheapest of the 3 im considering, also.

3.Dmax. Plenty of power, liveable mpg.

End of advantages.

Expensive to buy, maintain. Once warranty runs out, im scared as hell to keep a new generation diesel. NOTHING under the hood can be replaced for under 3k.

Last option is to wait. Im still abt 1.5yrs from actual buying.

Here is what id like to see.

A updated version of the gasser to get dropped under the hood by GM in 2016. Iron block, 6.2,slightly lower cam profile, and compression than the half ton variant, but with better mpg/power than the old 6.0.

Gm knows the old gasser is due for a reboot. This would be my preferred option.

Thoughts?

You thinking 2015 is the last year of the iron 6.0?

I would be shocked if it survives an update. With engine management extending the lifespan of these aluminum engines out so far, there is no practical advantage for iron any more.

I think even the diesels will use aluminum alloy blocks in the near future. The heads on the DMax are AL already.

Sounds like your looking for an excuse to wait for a maybe vehicle that maybe will never happen.

Except for the MPG being really low I'm completely satisfied with my new gasser.

Almost went diesel but to much hassle to maintain.

Not so much that. My wife's Enclave will be paid off in a year. Just want to stay from being under 2 vehicle notes.

If within a year or so, GM hasnt revamped the gasser, ill still have misgivings about what I want.

If they do update the gas engine with, say +40tq and hp, maybe a 2mpg increase, ill go that route for sure.

With as little driving as I do, its hard to justify the diesel.

At todays gas prices, I could pay for nearly a DECADE of fuel for the gasser by what id save from not going diesel.

It sounds like the truck your wishing GM would make is your best option, haha. An updated 2500HD gasser will be on my short list of truck considerations when I get mine paid off as well. That being said, my dad just bought a new 2015i 2500HD gasser, and it's really nice. If you haven't driven one of the newer 6.0's yet, you should. The new 6.0, with the 6-speed, and 4:10 gears is no slouch. It's a night and day difference from the old 6.0 and 4-speed. Plus, my dad's truck only gets about 1-2 mpg less than my truck. My vote is for a current 2500HD gasser....or wait and hope that GM starts putting the 6.2 in the 2016 model.

Very happy with my '15 6.0 gasser.. Almost went diesel.. Still have an 05 Dmax in the fleet. Though it's been a great truck injectors are a lot of $$$ when they went out last year. Sounds like the new gen diesels are even more to maintain with DEF. The 6.0 pushes snow great! Tows very well in town too! Just bad fuel eco. which is the only down fall of this truck.. But it's a TRUCK!

I bet they update the 2500 gas next year or two. Wouldn't shock me if they did the 5.3 with 8 speed though as it makes the power of the 6.0 and then some.

You shouldn't worry about the 8 speed. If you are get the extended warranty. You obviously don't need the 16,000lb towing of the 2500, just max tow of the 1500.

I have been searching for months. I had my dealer look for a 6.0, 6.6, and a 1500 with max tow. With the options I want (basically everything but leather)it's been tough. He finally found a 1500 configured the way I chose. It's getting picked up from another dealer tomorrow. I own and operate a medium sized Remodeling company. I drive close to 250 miles per day so the 1500 is the better decision. It can still tow/haul plenty with the max tow and still net decent mileage unloaded....I hope. The 6.6 is my dream truck, but not necessarily "needed." I was torn between them all for a couple months but as soon as he found a match, I jumped. In the end it's about what you need/want. Sounds like the 1500 or 6.0 would be sufficient. That diesel is fun though. I'll get one next time. I have been in need of any truck since I totalled the last ride a month ago today.

I am positive '15 will be the last year for the 6.0 6-speed, the new motor will be direct injection with a 8-speed,we will have the power, the mileage, and the gears, it will be awesome!

I'm not being rude...and I've read enough of your posts to know that you're not full of BS...but, how do you know for sure? Do you have a link you can share? I haven't been able to find any facts about that...only wishful thinking and speculation...

Sorry to hear about your accident. What happened? Your old truck was super sharp. The new one should be nice! Do you plan to lift it too?
