Socket & Wrench Sets

Recommended Posts

Folks- I have a nice 252 piece Husky Brand (Home Depot) socket & wrench set like is pictured below. I've had it for a few years now, and it has served me well, but unfortunately the carrying case is crap and the locking tabs have broken off, which is quite disappointing considering it's a nice tool set and wasn't cheap yet they can't make a case for it that will be as durable as the actual tools. What suggestions do you have as far as a carrying case goes? I need something where everything is pre-laid out like in the case, with size numbers and what not so that I don't waste time hunting for the right size, and I need something that I can easily carry around with me.

Also, what do you use as far as wrench organizers go? The ones I've had in the past were plastic and broke quite easily.

Since you want the sizes separated I say maybe look at tackle boxes that allow you to adjust the compartments. Won't be sizes marked unless you use a sharpie or something. That's the best thing I can think of for what you want. But, if you separate each socket and keep them in order I see no need to write the sizes for each one.

Is there any chance that you have a warranty on the till set? If so, perhaps that would also cover the case? You could also contact the tool company to see about a replacement case.

The cases those tools come in are not made to last forever, most of them usually have teh closing tabs snap off like you stated. The only tool sets I have had luck with ar my Snap-On containers, they seem to last, unlike my Craftsman cases. My Snap-On torque wrench and extra wrench sets are kept inside the hard cases that were supplied with the wrenchs, I've had them for years and use it all the time opening and closing the cases several thousand times by now with no issues.

If you can, look for used OR new Snap-On hard plastic cases. They are a little pricey but are well worth it because they seem to last, unlike others.

Well folks, to Home Depot's credit, I did contact them via e-mail and expressed first of all how much I have enjoyed the tool set, and that with the use it has seen sometimes hard sometimes light, none of the sockets or drivers have given me any trouble. Then I expressed my disappointment in the carrying case, telling them what good is a lifetime warranty tool set if the case that is made to hold those tools can't last as long. Within 24 hours I received a phone call from a very nice lady at Home Depot customer support and in the 15 minutes I spent on the phone with her talking about the use, and what not, I got from her the following:

1. An apology for the case not standing up to the quality Home Depot wants and expects from it's various tool manufacturers.

2. Confirmation that Home Depot no longer carries that specific tool set anymore and no longer contract with the company that produced that tool set for Home Depot.

3. A suggestion on a possible replacement for the tool set

4. A $80.00 gift card for me to go purchase that replacement.

So in addition to being able to keep my existing set, I got me a new tool chest and tools.

Did Home Depot leave me completely satisfied with the resolution to this issue? ABSOLUTELY!

Many years ago - I bought a few sets of Tool Tagz - tough labels that wrapped around the bottom of my sockets.. They were great! As no matter which way the socket was turned - you could easily see the size. Northern Tool used to carry them.. no longer available now. Most Socket Size Labels are now stickers - but only show on one side of the socket. Still - far better than nothing if you need to see the size. These are inexpensive enough to buy a couple sets at a time - one or two to use - others for spares. Get 5 sets for $16.00 - - what Deal..
