Tips for getting most MPG out of 5.3 V8

I have a 2014 Silverado CC ltz z71 with the 5.3 v8. This is my DD so I am just curious as to what have people done, or what can be done to make this as fuel efficient as possible? I know I can tune it but I am weighing the options of voiding my warranty to do so.

 

Now since I live in Chicago its been like 10 degrees out so I know that will kill the MPG a little, and I don't drive crazy or hammer the gas at all. But I have been getting anywhere from 10-13 mpg city driving and an average of 11 mpg overall (90% city driving) with only 400 miles on the truck so far...

That's about what you can expect for city driving with lots of stop and go. I drive about 15 miles round trip to work and average 12.2-14.5mpg. I only get above 13mpg when traffic is fairly clear and not many stops. This with the 6.2L as well, once you get past the break in you'll probably increase a little bit. Now highway I am getting 19-23mpg depending on the gradient of the road and my speed. So I know my mpg is on point. Just city driving kills it. As far as a tuner goes you can purchase a Diablo Sport i1000 or T1000 and never have to worry about warranty. You can reset the truck back to stock and it just looks as if the battery died on the dealerships side. Personally I've never seen an increase in mpg with a can tune from a handheld. But I have had great results with a custom tune from someone like Diablew. He tuned my 2012 which was lifted on 33's and AWD. I ended up getting the same mpg as stock around town and a tad better on the highway. Hope this helps.

Tip... Tire pressure and drive easy. Thats about all you can do since your mileage is coming from city driving. Thats pretty close to what I'm getting. Around town, I'm getting 14-15mpg but im not in the "city" either, just short trips around town. On the Highway, I get 22-23 mpg.

You running around in 4x4? That doesn't sound right. 35 psi in your tires, cruise control, and a k&n filter help.

Nah. Thy as about right, City driving kills the mileage. Even in the suburbs I average 13-15 mpg in the cold. Summer I see 16-18. Out on the highway it gets 20+.

17-18 city, 23-24 highway

 

On the highway, I use cruise control whenever possible. The truck's computer is much better than I am for fuel efficiency. Usually 2 miles over posted speed limit.

 

City driving, I coast every chance I get, time traffic signal lights, very easy on the throttle from stops, "grandpa driving". I don't care if I piss off the yuppies who are in a big hurry.

 

If I want to hear that sweet Magnaflow exhaust, I know there's a price to pay for that too! :thumbs:

Yea I was expecting this being normal.. I haven't even put my truck in 4x4 yet but I have a lot of stop and go traffic to and from work so I am assuming it was because of that. I have stock 20's wheels at 35 psi.

 

I have noticed once I get on a good stretch of city driving it does go up a bit but nothing higher than 14 mpg really.. And I looked into the diablew custom tune but I have read that GM has installed a flash counter which no matter if you go back to stock settings or not it still showed that it has been flashed. And this is how GM is denying warrenties.

 

I could be wrong but that's what I have read on this forum under the tuner sticky thread.

Make sure Auto-4wd is OFF unless roads are really sloppy... That is a huge right there... Keep tires around 40 psi.. other than that, just standard eco-driving tips.

 

Frankly, I was getting really bored driving the truck like a fuel sipper and gas prices came down, so I'll get into it every once in a while for on-ramps to remind me whats under the hood.

Can you post a link to the thread, this is the first I am hearing of such a thing. DiabloSport prides themselves on being the only ones out there that are undetectable.

Below is the link to the thread i mentioned. A bunch of people go back and forth about the flash counter and warranty.. I still don't know what is actually the truth on tune and warranty topic.. so if anyone has any definitive answers one way or another please share!
