4 Wheel Drive Wont Stay Locked

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i have a 99 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 in it. the trucks got 240k on it and still runs strong but the past couple months has been giving me shit with the 4wd. Its got the floor shift for it and drops in but in situations where im in deep snow or trying to hog my way up a big hill the 4wd light on the dash goes out and and it kicks out even though the floor shifter is still locked in.

Like i said its situations where im really spinning and then normally once i stop my 4wd engages again. then as i make another run spinning my way up the hill the light flicks off and i get stuck. would this be something to do with the actuator?

There is 2 things it could be , the shift collar inside maybe and the actuator ,

This is a tricky one , I can't see how the actuator just says "I'm done " and unwinds , the actuator does turn on the light I believe , a schematic will prove that ,

The t case shift plate inside rotates and closes the switch to tell the actuator to get busy and its on a pretty decent detent in every range ,

Good luck , throw an actuator at it for giggles

Right you are about the actuator/4wd light tie in. I read that in some GM literature at some point. If the actuator doesn't engage then the light circuit should stay open. If there was a short in the line running to the actuator couldn't it be disturbed more-so when the front end is being really thrashed (and thus disengage). If the actuator doesn't do it, it might be worth checking the condition of the wires running to the actuator.
