Residential Plows and 3/4-Ton Pickups

Recommended Posts

Hey gang -

Let's get the tech out of the way first: 2015 GMC 2500HD w/the Duramax. It was not ordered with the plow prep. Now my challenge: my 1/4-mile road is privately owned and therefore not plowed by the county. The last, say, 25-30 yards of my road are actually mine; no one else uses it for anything. On top of that, my driveway is another 25-30 yards long. So in total, we're talking somewhere on the order of 50-60 yards of pavement.

I'm actively considering attaching a plow to the front of the big truck to help me clear my driveway and my stem. A big, heavy-duty snow blower is still very much an option, but that'll take a while to do. I have no interest in purchasing an ATV just to attach a plow to it; it'll never get used for anything else. Also, hiring someone to handle it is an option that can't be ignored. But relying on someone else has kinda gotten me into the situation I'm in now.

I'm not 100% convinced this is the right thing to do yet. But assuming I do go that route, what I don't really want to do is spend a boat-load of cash on a HD plow that will be used 2-3 times a winter, and for 50-60 yards of pavement. The issue is that it doesn't look like the various "Residential" plows will fit on the bigger trucks. All of the plow makers have smaller versions of their blades (Fisher has the Homesteader, sister company Western has the Suburbanite, etc, etc).

So after all of that bloviating: has anyone seen, heard of, or tried to attach one of the smaller blades to the bigger trucks?

Find a used minimum 7.5' Fisher, Western or Boss they're everywhere on Craigslist for $2500 give or take. The residential plows are not made for 3/4 tons as they'll destroy the thin metal they're made of.

I've gotta say this is first. I normally see everyone wanting to put a big plow on a small half ton or SUV.

I do not have experience with brands other than THE BOSS, so I can't really speak to that. But I have a 7.5' BOSS Standard Duty on my '15 2500HD. The Standard Duty was the lower end, non-heavy duty, non commercial duty plow; but it is still strong and dependable. They are coming out with a Homeowner marketed plow. Currently BOSS uses the same undercarriage for all of their plows until you go up to 10', then the mounts are different.

For your situation, I would look into getting a used heavier duty plow. I would not want one of the small home owner ones built for the small pickups and SUVs. I think they'd fold like a tin can as soon as they had to deal with any large drift or obstruction.

Yep, I can well imagine the head-scratching that my post caused. My goal was to try not to over-buy on the plow, get one that weighed in at a huge amount requiring extra ballast, etc. All for northern Virginia winters which are in no way, shape, or form as bad as what you guys get up north. It might get used once or twice a winter. Maybe three times. But that's unlikely.

Fair; I hadn't considered used as I'm generally not interested in buying second hand and getting a questionable piece of equipment. But it would save some money, for sure.

Thanks for the advice.

If you go for a nice new one, something in the 7'6" variety recommended for a 1/2 ton ought to fit the bill. If you go with a used, heavier blade, it wouldn't hurt to toss the higher rated plow prep torsion bars in it. In both situations, Timbrens would be good too.

Having plowed for the last 7 years (3 years on my own) I would highly suggest a Boss plow. I bought a used 8' for $1k put a new lift ram on it (old one leaked bad) Re wired the plow side and put a back drag blade on it. I commercially plowed with it for 3 years and only fail I ever had was I blew a line. I beat the hell out if it and it never bent or failed. It had zero paint left on it, but made me a pile of money. If you go the used route I would get no smaller then 8' and go with boss. the hook up is easy, the control is easy to use, and parts aren't horrible for them. The motor is about the biggest expense you will see if it ever goes out and they can be bought for around $300. Just check for cracks on the frame of the plow or repairs. If it has any signs of that I would walk away. Mine was beat to hell, but never broke nor did it ever need any welding done on it.

I've had Western, Meyer, Snoway, and Boss plows on various trucks/Jeeps. I liked the Snoway the best but like my current Boss a lot, too.

The only thing I don't like about the Boss is the 13-pin connector can be an SOB to plug in at times, especially if the plow has been sitting outside in very cold temps. I've thought about doing a different connector set-up maybe with weather packs as I take my plow off whenever I'm not plowing. Newer Boss plows have a simple 2-prong connector (optional I think).

I know this is an older subject, but if the original poster is still looking for input. I have the snow sport HD on my avalanche 2500 and love it for small jobs. It's light and easy to install and remove and with a tie down strap I've been able to move even the heavier hardened snow. I use it for my house, and my parents/in-laws/sisters driveway.

Nice thing about that is it requires no hydraulics, no electrical connections, etc. Nice and light and can be removed or installed as needed in a minute or two with no tools. Does a great job for most folks.

And how does it handle turf, rock, bricks, and other stuff?

Loads of used blades around Im with the boys suggesting you get a used one easily under 3k. And you have the truck to do it so may as well get the correct size. You will hate to be in a snow storm and wish you had that extra capacity.

Id go for a used 3 way electric over hydrolic fisher or myers boss is too pricey no need for split v blade.

Got a Snowsport HD blade for my 2500. Have to move around and plow various areas, especially sections of gravel road 1.5 miles to the highway because we get hind tit from the county on snow removal, so have a winch mount setup that allows raising and lowering the blade from the cab for those short jaunts from one snow drift to another. Gave design I wanted to local fab shop and picked it up today. Just have to pick up a couple of small items at the hardware store in the morning and job will be done. Got a 2500 lb winch with wireless remote off Amazon for $60. Anyone could get a similar winch and remote at Harbor Freight for similar amount. The fab shop did great. Looks like original equipment for the Snowsport blade. Total cost of entire setup under $1500. Will post a few pics of the setup when I get it finished tomorrow.

Finished Snowsport HD setup. Added a mount and winch setup to it I had a local fabrication shop put together for me. Total cost of entire setup (blade, mounts, winch, etc) under $1600. Wireless remote. Got the winch and remote off Amazon for $60. Harbor Freight has similar units with wireless remote for equivalent pricing.
