When in reverse truck has a large slamming noise

Recommended Posts

A few thoughts.

1. Do you have a G80? Sometimes engagement of the G80 isnt the smoothest depending on the conditions of when it locks up.

2. You might have a close look at the condition of the rear driveshaft u-joints

3. Look closely at the rear axle pinion / yoke nut.

4. Ring and pinion gear missing teeth.

5. Broken rear axle shaft.

1. Self expanitory.

2. Park where you can easily access the driveline and put the vehicle in neutral, with the parking brake on. (its important to have the driveline "relaxed" and not have any tension on it as would typically happen when you leave drive and put it in park). If it is easier for you to access the driveline, jack up the rear of the vehicle so the rear tires are off of the ground and use jackstands for safety. Grab the driveshaft on either side of a u-joint and try and twist the driveshaft apart at the u-joint with both hands. Try pushing very hard up and down at the u-joint. You are looking for any movement within the u-joint itself and for any movement from the u-joint where it press fits into the driveshaft yoke. Given the noise you describe, if it were a u-joint failing that caused the noise, it would be very obvious that it was shot.

3. For the rear axle pinion, do the same. Grab the driveshaft where it bolts up to the rear axle yoke and push very hard up and down on the yoke. Also try to pull and push the yoke into and out of the rear axle as if you were trying to rip it out of the axle. You are looking for any movement (other than rotational movement) which could indicate a failed / failing pinion bearing or perhaps a loose pinion nut.

4. If you've not looked at the rear differential fluid in awhile, now would be a good time to drop the cover and visually inspect the ring gear and pinion gear for missing teeth, or if any of the ring gear bolts might have somehow backed out.

5. It does happen, particularly if you have big tires and you have the driveline in a bind and you gas it. As I recall, there is a thread within the past few weeks about a forum member breaking a rear axle shaft.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with additional ideas.

If the noise was up front it could be a motor mount.

A broken motor mount will cause a loud sound as the engine drops back down when you let off of gas in reverse. The left one will let it lift in reverse if I remember right. If not that, what he said.^^

Good luck & post your repair.
