AFE installed

Recommended Posts

Got the AFE installed today. Has a nice note, not too loud. My only gripe is on the passenger side of the muffler, the factory hanger bushing rubs the muffler case. See pic below. I could take a razor knife and clearance the bushing, but I'd rather not. I'm going to email it to AFE today and see what they say prior to me cutting my factory bushing. in the meantime it will melt away some of it. I drove it already and it melted a spot. Sound of the exhaust is good, piping is spot on the money. Everything is fitting so nice except this one spot.

Bending the bracket away from the muffler might work... have to look at that option. just curious what AFE will respond with. This is supposed to be a bolt on system. Sound clip. Will do later this week. Kinda sounds like your typical V8 GM 1500 with a flow-master on it tooling around town. The V4 mode doesn't sound as bad I thought it would be. But we'll see this week on the highway for work. I managed to remove the stock system w/out cutting or damaging it. You have to remove the RR shock. slide the system back, drop the front down past the cross member and then pull forward and rotate as needed to get over the axle. I know I read some posts here where guys were having a heck of a time removing the factory system. Figured I'd share that... 15 minutes or so to pull the factory system.

AFE is going to have to send you an updated design for it to fit properly. Seeing it's a new model year, they obviously don't have their measurements correct at this point. My guess is they will have a redesigned piece of exhaust pipe to send you, that's usually what the companies do.

Don't cut the bushing, wait on the correct piece of pipe from AFE. If they don't supply one, go to a muffler shop, they should be able to get you taken care of for a few dollars.

10-4 guys. The muffler doesn't sit perfectly level either. The passenger side is up a touch. It's like that passenger side hanger bracket should of been about 1/2" longer and there would not be an issue hitting the muffler and the muffler would be perfectly level. My 2 cents. I'll update when and what AFE comes back with. Nothing like aftermarket parts... This morning's drive to work wasn't that bad. It was in the upper 40's down here in central FL. I got excellent mileage. The exhaust has for sure, w/out a doubt fixed the power lag I experienced since new. Between the flexible gas pedal bracket and the stock flapper exhaust there was always a huge lag from when you stepped on the gas to when power was created. I shimmed the gas pedal, that was huge. And now the exhaust really opened it up. Response is much quicker. Drone on the highway is not there. This exhaust is loudest around 45-50mph cruising in V4 mode. At 75, 80 etc it's fine. very livable. Granted I still want this exhaust setup, but a few db's quieter... but it's an aftermarket part for the masses. I honestly think a noise level between this AFE and stock would be perfect for the "work" guys like me that live out of our trucks. But the power, no flapper squeak etc are more than worth a bit more noise.

My afe was hitting there also rubbed a small dent into the bushing and now it's 1/4 away from hitting it never noticed until I read your post and checked. I agree exhaust is loudest in v4 around 40-45mph I have 1k on mine and it has gotten a little louder since install but still sounds great and doesn't bother the wife or kids going upnorth great system for the price!

I live in Tampa. Wesley chapel area. I just drove the truck around the job site and it sounds great. I truly am loving this exhaust. Just wish it didn't rub the mount. It sounded so loud at 5am on the way to work, but at 2pm around the site it sounded quiet :) I think the noise level is spot on. I'm going to see about either bending the support back or trimming the bushing. I don't see any other option unless AFE says they're sending me a new muffler with a redesigned mount. Wish I'm hoping they do!

^Not yet. One problem at a time. I want to get this cat-back in and punch listed before I start a 2nd phase. My MPG's are much better. I averaged 22 to work today and I went to the gym and averaged 20 there and 20 back. I'm actually very surprised on the mileage. I think GM left something on the table there due to either cost of a better designed exhaust or more noise. My truck is basically averaging 20mpg now. solid. Need to get AFE to say something in regards to this rubbing mount. We know have 2 confirmed cases on this thread. My honest opinion is the passenger side bracket should of been cut and welded at the same plane as the driver side. They have mounts overlapping each other and one is on top of the other. So I think someone didn't account for that overlap. See revised pic to see what I'm talking about.
