Towing over capacity

Recommended Posts

I towed a 11k enclosed trailer from Florida to Oklahoma with a weight distribution hitch and trailer brakes. With out the weight distribution hitch it would set the frame on the axle. my max speed was 55mph. As I type this my 2012 with 42k is in the dealership with a real bad rear end howl. This tow was over 10k ago, but it obviously sped the wear up exponentially. Now I do not know if it is actually a direct relation, but it makes me wonder.

Other than being dumb what is the down side of towing a 9100 lb. trailer with a trucks capacity of 7500 lbs. It is a 1 time tow for about 40 miles and no major inclined hills.

These trucks are designed with a safety factor in mind. Knowing most of us never actually weigh our loads before hauling them I would say 8,000 would be the max I would even think of doing with your rig. 9100 is a bit much. Get a bigger truck for this trip.

I use to tow all over the country with 3/4 and one ton dually diesels for hundred of thousands of miles for many years. It's the trailer and its brakes that matters. I was legal and passed all dot regulations. In the mid 90s I did demos for the DOT Florida with a clearing machine on the side of their roads. The were going to raise the speed limit and needed to clear their trees back a bit for run off. Those trucks had 165 HP and 400 ft lbs of tq. They maintain the speed limit had a safe stopping distance and lasted 100K miles with normal maintenance, while pulling 25-33 K lbs. The trailer was double axle dual wheel with vacuum over hydraulic brakes. The tires were 10 to 14 ply all around. I said it before I'll say it again it's the trailer and its brakes that mater. It doesn't matter if you have a 1/2 to 4 ton truck if you exceed the weight of the truck and your trailer brakes fail your SOL.

Been in a Ford Super Duty when the trans input shaft sheared. Load was excess of CGVWR. A little back and forth rock a few times from changing from braking to accelerating and ....zoobaa. No mo go. all while driving nice. Do what you gotta do.

The single biggest issue (assuming auto. tranny) is not towing, but stopping. How will you feel if you can't .... and kill someone or yourself.

If he kills himself he probally wont feel anything, but i have been told you can be cited for towing a trailer equiped with trailerbrakes with a truck that does not have a controller. When I bought my trailers I put brake controlers in both my trucks to makes sure i would be able to handle them in either truck.

The risk would be the lives and safety of everybody else on the road.......that's about all I guess.

Do not just yourself a favor, but for everybody else that may be in your path. Go rent an HD for this tow, be as safe as possible.
