Tire Pressures

I changed out the stock tires on my '15 Denali 2500HD to Toyo O/C AT2's, and upsized to 295/60R20's. They were inflated by the installer to 80PSI front and rear (max recommended on the sidewall). With the 2" level, at this pressure the ride is very harsh.

 

I can't seem to find much information out there on the best pressure to run in these tires. I'm obviously wanting to maximize the tread life, while hopefully easing the harshness a bit. As a test, I deflated them down to 65PSI last night, and it made a world of difference in the ride.

 

I'm looking for guidance from you guys out there with experience. By the way, I'm not typically hauling payloads anywhere near max (rarely even 50%), and I tow a 5k trailer regularly. Thanks in advance.

Look up your tires on the inflation table and use the total weight of your truck divided by the 4 tires to determine how much weight each tire is carrying and inflate accordingly.

 

I've got 275/65/R18 ATM's and I'm running 50 cold. You may have to play with the pressure to find the sweet spot for the weight and handling.

If you don't pull anything drop the rears to 45psi and the fronts at 65psi. I play with them until the sidewalls and tread on the pavement looks correct.

 

I only buy 3500 trucks so no tpms so I am guessing you will have problems.

Being that you have a 2500hd, and it has TPMS, there will be a lower limit to how low you can go. I have had them on my regular cab 17"wheel as low as 60psi and the light has never came on. There is a low point to it, but I'm not sure how low. But, because they are set so high to begin with, there is a good threshold allowed before the light trips.

Put some chalk in a thick strip across your tire tread and roll back/forth on the asphalt, lower tire pressure until the chalk stripe is wearing off making full contact across the tread face of your tires.

The TPMS has seizures when I drop back tires to 60 psi. Too bad, I just ignore the TPMS. I am not going to run OEM recommended pressures when I am empty. I can see if I was loaded up. I run 60 all the way around for general purpose. Thinking of dropping pressure a little lower.

 

I just wish Michelin would post load / pressure tables for the LT tires like they do with the heavy commercial truck tires. I contacted Michelin and they punted to the OEM door recommendation. Probably a quid pro quo between the OEM and Michelin.

On my 2011 25HD I run 45 psi all around, (50 front when plowing) and I get decent ride and 13-14 mpg combined, I never have a load in the truck except when I tow my 8500 lb boat I push up the psi to 55-60. ... tire life is 85,000 miles rotated every 10,000 -15,000 miles. I just get used to the truck dash light on full time. When I start the truck I scroll thru and check the tire pressures and it resets the DIC to no warning ... but the tire icon remains. Did the same PSI on my 04 as well

Well I weighed my 2015 2500HD 6.0L LT Z71 snow plow prep package double cab full of fuel tonight at the farmer's coop elevator in town tonight. Just me and wife and about 200b of tool box and contents in the back at the front of the box. 4120b on the steer axle and 3130 on the back axle. Since max on the front rating is 4400 according to the OEM info I got from the brochure, I figure running 55 as opposed to 60 up front ok. And one could easily run 45 or 50 in the back when empty. Been at 60 all the way around, but Charlie is probably not far off the reservation either. I might go down to 50 all the way around for a while and see what the results are.

I have a hard time believing your front gvrw is only 4400lbs, what does the door sticker say?

yeah you are right. I was reading wrong chart. 5200 gross front axle rating on mine. Good catch! Thanks for making me take another look!

 

Did drop to 55 psi all the way around. Major improvement in ride. I realize that the OEM needs to factor in the idiots when they put out recommended pressures, but they really need to have pressures / load charts for various loading and such for owners.

 

Wife took pickup on a 200 mile one way road trip to go to a wedding shower for her niece after I put pressures to 55. MPG has remained pretty much similar to normal highway mpg we have gotten up to this pressure change... 15-16 mpg. Not bad since she had 10-15 mph south crosswind, with some 20-25 mph gusts, hitting the pickup both ways.

My tires from the factory had around 80psi In the rear and maybe around 65 in the front... Rode like a Conestoga wagon. Dropped to about 50 and it made a world of difference
