onstar service required for app?

Recommended Posts

What are you getting this from. Last I knew, all you had to do was use the app once during the trial and you will be able to use it for 5 years if you don't have Onstar active. I pay for Onstar anyways so no big deal for me.

That's the way it worked for my 2014. I have been using it free for several months now.

I found/find it extremely annoying. The odd time I would want to use it, the stupid thing would have signed me out (despite having turned on the auto sign in) and then it wouldn't allow me to sign in again.(and then, other times, I would be magically signed back in??) Huge issues with trying to sign in and it tells you it's the US site when it's not, etc, on the computer, never mind with the phone. So, I'd just give up on it. Did I really need to start the truck with the phone and not my keys? No. And I can check my own tire pressure. Now, despite supposedly still being allowed to use the key fob choices on the phone . . . I cannot. I apparently need a pin and I have no idea what I used (don't even remember using one) before and Onstar won't let me log in to find out since I no longer have Onstar. Trying a variety of numbers locked me out then signed me out and now it won't let me sign back in, again, because i have no Onstar account anymore. But I get to use the app still . .. . so why does that matter??? Egads. Technology is a freaking waste of time and very frustrating. And GM is even more frustrating.

I've never had an issue with Onstar or the Remotelink app ever since getting the truck at the end of April of last year. The only time I did it was company wide for a handful of days because they were updating their system or something like that. I don't use the remote buttons, I use the app for vehicle info without having to go to the truck.

The free app is only good on 2015-up vehicles. If you bought it new you get the OnStar "Basic" plan free for 5 years. With this plan you can download the app and use it for remote start/unlock-lock/lights. You can also get a monthly diagnostic email for free. For all other features you need to upgrade to one of the paid plans.

BTW -- the Onstar app is going away. It is being replaced by brand-specific apps (MyBuick, MyGMC, MyChevrolet) so you need to search for those in the app store. The OnStar one will work for now but GM will not be updating it. The new apps do the same thing they are just skinned differently for each brand.

I got email from them at Christmas saying that I could have 36 months of free basic service for OnStar, it took 4 phone calls to get it going again but the mobile app now works on my 2011!!! :jester:

I just canceled service and was told my key fob functions will still work on the app, and i will get the service emails until 2020. I have a 2015.

Like I said - the "Basic" plan is free for 5 years ...
