Shell or what?

I was reading another post that brought up something that I have always found interesting. That being, why are there different names for camper shells? Topper, shell, canopy, cap, bed cap, box cap? It seams to be regional.

I lived in California and it was shells. I moved to Oregon and tried to buy a 'shell' on Craigslist and couldn't even find ONE! I knew that was impossible because with the rain so many people have them up here. Then I talked to a guy and he said that they called them 'canopies' up here and when I looked that up there were hundreds.

I can't think of another truck part that has so many different names depending on the region you live in. Can you?

Haha... for the last 40 years here in Missouri, they have been called "Camper Shells".

But now, it's very uncool and unfashionable to call them that. (Probably somehow linked to the Political Correctness movement... )

I've heard the guys in the Truck Accessory stores call them "Truck Caps".

Always called it a cap in NH. Folks call them toppers out here in MI though.

But people here are weird. They call soda pop and parking garages either parking rams or parking decks.
