So, 2007-2014 6.0 trucks are GtG, overall, yes?

Recommended Posts

Was flip flopping between a 2014+ half ton,with the, 6.2, or a pre-2014 2500,z71,and the 6.0.

Availability of the 6.2 is in question, on top of which, the sketchiness of the new 8spd,has me leaning toward the 2500.

I know the 6.0 is super solid.

Overall, how is the rest of the truck?

Trans? 4wd?

Ride?

Anything to look out for? Ill be buying one slightly used. 2012-2014. Under 36k mi.

The overall HD running gear/chassis has been the same from 2011 to 2015. Might ride a bit rough, but it is an HD. 6.0/6L90E is fairly stout.

I have a '13 HD with the 6.0 gasser. Mileage is not that great, it's noisy like a truck, it rides like a truck and it works like a truck. I really like the truck with the only exception being the wind noise. I live in Kansas and on occasion it can get a little windy here. Get one out on the freeway get her up to about 80 on a windy day and see if you can tolerate the wind noise. IMO the new body is much better in this regard.

And thats a thought.

Should I go with the new body style, and the refinements, or go with the pre-2015, and have one with all the bugs worked out, given, they are the last of that generation?

11-14 are good trucks. Frame is %100 better than the 07-10 frame which was the 01-06 frame with a new body up top. 07-14 there are a couple common water leak culprits (3rd brake lights crack). You can swap to towing mirrors plug and play, no complicated crap like the new ones.

Overall they are solid. Just keep up with the maintenance and they I'm not convinced that GM has solved all the broken exhaust manifold stud/bolt issues and would consider replacement a 50K mile or less maintenance item. It may be unnecessary but it's a heck of a lot cheaper to replace them before they break.

Unless the stock mirrors are the power folding from what I understand/ remember when upgrading my '10-1500 mirrors which was the same as my '13-2500HD: Plug and play as mentioned, but I had power mirros that have to be manually folded. If power folding, you need to have the truck computer (bcm I think) reprogrammed.

So far happy with my '13- 2500HD. Ride is stiff, but I have the 20's, AND live in Mi where the roads just seem to be going from bad to worse!!! Get on a smooth road with a few, minor bumps here and there it isn't bad, but on a bad road I sometimes think a dirt road would be smoother!

Good luck!

And running tire pressures that are more appropriate for the amount of load you have on really makes a huge difference in ride quality and handling. When empty, I rarely run over 50 PSI all the way around. I air them up when I know I am going to stack the weight on. As for the 6.2 8 spd vs 6.0L and 6 speed, I opted for the latter in buying my 2015 2500HD LT Z71. The 6.0 and 6L90 are a well tested, proven, reliable combination. The 6.2 and the 8 spd are too new to the party to determine much of anything about them in terms of being durable and reliable. I gave up being an OEM guinea pig a long time ago. I need a reliable pickup for my needs. And the 6.0L and 6L90, though not being ooh wow as far as numbers go, still can kick some butt. The 2015 2500 with the 6.0L smoked the snot out of a 2015 Ram 2500 with the 6.4L, a motor that has 60 more hp and 50 more lb of torque than the 6.0, much like the 6.2 GM motor. The 6.0 2500 beat the Ram 6.4L up the Ike Gauntlet pull test by almost a minute and a half.

And the 6.2 has that goofy AFM cylinder shutdown thing going on which the 6.0L doesn't. As Scotty on Star Trek stated quite clearly.... "the more complicated you make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain".

The 6.0 is a cast iron engine designed with plenty of cooling and made for heavy duty use. The 6.2 is a light duty aluminum engine that does not have the cooling capacity for heavy duty use.

I'll stick with the proven 6.0 with the 6L90 any day. My 2012 was taken back to the dealer once for a leaking front axle seal, can't beat getting lucky with a well built low maintenance truck. An old school big block with modern fuel injection would be better yet, but I don't know if we will ever see those torque monster gas engines again.

Yeah, that is sad. I would be heading to a dealer quick if GM ever offered the 454 again, updated with newer fuel delivery. I have been fond of the 454 since i got my first one in a 1973 El Camino SS.

  • 1 month later...

just bought an 11, no complaints...except mileage. About 13.3 mpg and that's with country driving. I'm sure I can get it to do better.

The 2500hd is made for hauling. Sounds good doesn't it, but it's what's not being said. Don't hit the brakes without anything behind it, you'll stop like you just ran into a solid wall that will not ,move. Best brakes I've ever had.

Acceleration is also scary. I drive slow and steady but not a poke along. Never had a setup that kicked into passing gear and with a tiny more gas kicked into rocket gear.

I don't mind anything about the ride, been driving p-trucks since 1977, I know how much better they have become..

They were big blocks. Lot of fun. Like to have seen yours back then. Street raced a 454 in a truck when I had a 400 trans am after it had some work. Couldn't walk away from it.

Got a say, a GTO was slow off the start, but while others were slowing down, it was just getting going. This 6.0 I have now acts the same way and one of the reasons I like it and respect it.

I was pleasantly surprised with the 6.0L in my 2015 2500. Thought it might be a dog compared to the 454 in my '98. The big block had a edge when it came to torque lower down the RPM band, but overall, the 6.0L isn't half bad. No regrets.
