GM 6" black round side steps flaking paint

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I noticed that some paint had come off my 6" round steps.
I have heavy duty mud flaps.

Now when I bought the truck, a 2014 Sierra All Terrain, I was very particular about having 'the least amount of chrome possible'. That's the reason why I went with the OEM black side steps (a friend had recomended against going aftermarket).

I'm dissapointed that 18 months after I got the truck, these steps are already looking like crap because (as you can see in pic 2) paint adhesion isn't that great. There's bubbling visible and I am worried another big chip is coming off soon. And after next winter, all I will be left are some ugly rusted out side steps.

Is this covered under waranty? Does anybody knows?

I would have them powder coated if you want the color to last on them. Textured Black PC would be a perfect fit.

I am guessing that GM accessories are not warrantied for more than a year, but I don't know that for a fact.

When I had my black Smitty steps I had the front of the bends behind the front wheels coated in bed liner to keep this very issue from happening.

I had chrome oem steps on my previous truck that started pitting after about 20,000 miles. The dealership warranted them under the bumper to bumper warranty no questions asked. I'd take it to your dealer and see what they say.

If they are purchaced with the truck new (new truck, new steps) they are 36 mo/36,000 mi. Over the counter sales are 12 mo/ 12,000 mi.

My 2018 running boards are chipping paint just like that.   Underneath is a shiney silver?   What material are the GM tubular running boards make out of?    I plan on doing a bedliner coating and need to figure out my prep before painting them.
