Max Trailering Pkg Mirrors

Recommended Posts

If I wanted the smaller mirrors on a truck with that max pkg (2015).....it doesn't seem like you can downgrade that one item fo buying that truck. Is it possible to make that change? That is, take the big mirrors off and put the small ones on? I tow.....and I want to upgrade my capability a bit with the max tow pkg......but don't neccessarily need to have the big mirrors. Costly modification I'm sure, but is it possible?

My opinion, I feel that being that you tow, you might regret dropping down to the small mirror as the tow mirrors give way better rear visibility than the small ones.

Haven't bought the truck yet....so just need to confirm i can put a standard mirror in place of the larger one that come on it.

Pretty sure there's only one version of the trailering mirrors if you're wondeirng which ones I would have. Of course, there may be chrome accented or not.

Of course, now I hear (from a dealer....so not completely sure it's correct) that the max trailering package only comes in a slt level (if you get the 6.2L)which makes you have to have leather.......?????

You can swap the mirrors if you wish to do so. IMO you should stick with the extendable tow mirrors if you plan on pulling anything. My 08 V-Max has them and it makes towing a little more comfortable by being able to view much more area than with standard mirrors, especially when backing into tight spaces.

I also tow with my 2010 that does not have the tow mirrors and it can be really frustrating at times because the view is extremely limited with standard mirrors. If it wasn't so expensive, I would definitely add a set of new factory tow mirrors. I have been keeping an eye out at the salvage yards for a GM truck with a set of good, usable tow mirrors. Definitely going to snag a set as soon as they turn up.

Not sure about the leather seats only with tow mirror option. Does the dealership have those trucks on their lot equipped that way? If so, they may be feeding you a line of B.S. They may not want to have to order or look to trade with another dealership for the options you want.

Try building a truck with the equipment you would like to have on the "build your own" option on the GMC website. That will give you an idea if it's possible to get the truck in the trim level you are looking for.

If he got Max Tow "AND" 6.2, it will be an SLT which WILL have leather, but can come with either split bench or bucket seats and console.

4wd 1500 Double Cab 6'6"box:

7200 lbs 4.3 3.42

6200 lbs 5.3 3.08

9200 lbs 5.3 3.42

9200 lbs 6.2 3.23

-------------

11000 5.3l 3.73

11900 6.2l 3.42 (only available with leather, slt)

If im forced to get leather if I want the max trailering package with the 6.2L......I guess I'll pass on the 6.2L. Thought the 6.2 L might help with giddy up and go when on the thruway for example. seems to only buy you another 900 lbs of towing capacity.

I have a 2008 ext cab with 3.73 and its only rated to 7900 lbs. If Im really going to notice a difference with this new 6sp tranmission (vs my 4 speed) I'll just stick with 11000 5.3L 3.73 max package.....hopefully it will feel different. Not that I'm going near 11000 lbs, but hopefully it can handle half that without too much trouble. My 08 is a bit of dog when towing a well balanced 5000 load!

btw, trust me on the bs that dealers feed you. Just assume all is complete bs.....it's easier than stressing about it. I've never been in a dealer yet where I don't know more of the specifics on the truck than the dealer. I'll call them on it constantly.

  • 6 months later...

So, I'm going down the path of ordering a 2016....but have not done it yet. I'm figuring out mods before I by the truck so I'm ready to go once it shows up! I waited to long last time on a particular truck...I want to enjoy this one from the start.

Anyway, I'm getting major mixed signals on being able to switch from camper mirrors to standard mirrors. I checked all this out with the 2015's and before I by a 2016 I wanted to know if it was possible. Apparently there are all sorts of issues with controls working or not working when doing the switch in either direction.

Of course....the screwy sales guy is 'sure we can'. For obvious reasons, lets not take his opion for anything.

I talked with the original parts guys (without anyone knowing) about this and the possibility of switching from camper to standard was a 'yes' for 2015. Now it's a know for 2016. He was pretty sympathetic with me since he wants to do the same thing and he got a buch of flak from the parts managers up above him. In the end...I need to call GM vs the dealer crap. If I order the parts and they don't plug into the harness......I end up paying for the parts. This is another example of GM making it so damn difficult.

I'd love to switch from my crappy, small standard mirrors for the trailer tow mirrors! Problem is, i hear the cost with dealer install and programming is $1200! For the 6 or so times per year i tow, I'll stick with stock, plus the very small extra view i get with my Longview slip on extensions. They are not bad but are not wide or tall enough.

I'm spoiled by the mirrors i had on my 99 superduty ford. They were awesome

Not sure if you've seen this? Thread discussing mirror swap compatability. Good luck with that!

I'm certainly not telling you how to spend your money. But wondering what your towing needs are? Do you really need the "NHT" package?

I'm currently towing a 35 ft. TT with a loaded weight of 7200 lbs. with my 2015 Dbl.Cab 1500 5.3 / 6A, 3.42 and even though I'm close to max payload I'm mostly satisfied with its performance.

Ironically, one of my future upgrades will be camper style mirrors.

Not sure if you are aware. For 2016 MY the LTZ / SLT come standard with the 5.3 / 8A, 3.42. This alone might give you the added towing performance you're looking for while staying with the small mirrors.

definitely want the extra capacity......but i dont tow everyday. ive heard (and driven) so many trucks where if you go by the numbers.....youll be totally fine. of course, this is s half ton statement. i like the idea of the 8sp std on the ltz......but all i want is a sle. gm is making me go to a 3/4......and oddly enough...i can get that with small mirrors

I occasionally pull a 25' camper, weight about 5,800lbs. Been using a 2008 5.3L/4speed LT. I was never happy with the rig as the engine/tranny combo was just a tad light in the britches for my needs. So, recently bought a 2015 LTZ with 8 speed tranny. What a huge difference. Pulling my camper now is effortless. It's a real pleasure to road trip with my camper in tow. I can get out on the Interstate (live in Texas) and set my cruise on 70mph and forget about worrying if my truck constantly shifting back and forth between 3rd and 4th gears. So, I highly encourage investing the extra money on a 6.2L/8 spd tranny. You won't be sorry. About the mirrors; sadly, I have std mirrors so I use some aftermarket slip-on mirrors that extend my rear view around the side and rear of my camper. They work ok but obviously not as good as factory tow mirrors. Anyway, if you have a truck spotted that you like and it has tow mirrors suggest you buy it - and keep the mirrors. After making a few tows with them you won't want to remove them.

+8, you may want to keep the tow mirrors, plus they fold and extend/contract. The standard mirrors were too small for me even for daily driving no tow load. Otherwise, happy to sell you my clip on tow mirrors if you end up making the switch.

They killed a lot of naugas to make my SLT leather seats, so you might be happy with them too.
