The news this week on the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon is that GM has started to update the 2016 ordering codes and is updating the order books to reflect the baby Duramax diesel engine packages. And they are packages. Diesels will come with engine (exhaust) braking and trailer options as part of the diesel package.

This being a forum, we thought it might be a good opportunity for us all to go on-record with our guesstimates of the percentages of Colorado and Canyon trucks GM will sell with the option. Presently, GM's monthly sales are at about 10,000 total Colorado and Canyon trucks. We suspect that the number will top-out at around an average of 15,000 once the trucks and their factories reach saturation. There might be a market for more, but it is unclear how many GM will be able to build.

As of today, we have not heard form GM what their prediction is for the Duramax. Perhaps you have. Regardless, We thought it might be fun to post up some guesses now for a later look. Here is my guess:

The Duramax will have a huge surge initially. Customers of Toyota will jump the fence. There is such a strong Tacoma diesel desire some folks will break ranks and come to the GM trucks. There are also a lot of GM truck loyalists that want the diesel truck. My prediction is that it will be as high as 30% take rate in some individual months, and the annual take rate will average about 20% once the diesel has been in the market. That is assuming GM can meet the demand.

What say you?

This will give them the edge on Toyota. Tacoma owners have been screaming for a diesel forever and Toyota never delivers. Smart move on GM's part considering the Tacoma is being redesigned for 2016.

I'll definitely be interested to try one of these out and even more interested in seeing how these do sales wise.

If they can high highway and average mpg's that threaten the Ram Ecodiesel, this thing could grab up those buyers and dominate the small/midsize truck market.

Would availability on the ext. cab model hurt? No, but I think it's crew cab only because that is the dominate selling body style. Same goes for 1500 trucks. Almost 2/3rds the sales in the pickup market are crew cab, hence why they get all the option packages and stuff that ext/double may or may not get, and regular cabs never get.

Same exact reason why the Silverado SS and early Sierra Denali were Ext. Cab

Has anyone announced what the numbers will look like for these? Mileage and power numbers?

I'd rather have a 6cyl in a full size truck. With as much as the Colorado and Canyon cost, you can just buy a V8 full size crew cab and still be at almost the same price.

A full sized truck with a v6 is the compete opposite of a mid sized truck with a diesel. I would assume the demand for a mid sized diesel is for higher tow capacity with the added torque.

I don't know how Toyota even sells the Taco. It's horribly outdated. And Toyota quality is a myth, I owned a 2008 Tacoma and that'll likely be my last.

It's a great idea but I think it'll cost too much. I'd venture a 1500 with the same trim will be less money than a diesel Colorado. In this state where diesel is near a dollar more a gallon I think it'll be a tough sell.
