2014 Silverado problems really starting to pile up!!

Recommended Posts

I have been brooding for the last couple of months since my 2014 Silverado (51k miles) has been increasingly using oil. Since purchase date October 2013 I've been to the service bay more times than I can remember with about 2 weeks of vehicle down time (I did get to use a nice impala to haul equipment and tow my boat with though). It all started with a "loose" feeling driver's seat accompanied by a clicking sound and progressed into six or seven repair iterations from two different dealers followed up with a seat heater failure. After finally getting a seat that I felt safe in, the truck developed a vibration that causes the empty passenger seat to shake from side to side at highway speeds (and yes I regularly rotate my tires). I guess I was feeling worn down by the divers seat fiasco that I decided to just accept the vibration and try to enjoy an otherwise very nice truck. Several months passed along with my bumper to bumper warranty and recently my drivers seat cushion heater and cooler stopped functioning. I'm now using about 1-1/2 quarts of oil every 2-3k miles and have had two not so good feeling occasions when on long trips in the middle of nowhere having the low oil light come on and having to pour 2 or more quarts of "expensive" quicky mart oil into the filler. It's a terrible feeling when you can't feel good about going on a long trip in your $50,000 truck. So today we are having some nice weather and I hopped in the truck to go get lunch and the ac is blowing warm air. I've had other new trucks, mostly Fords and none of them even my 99 Silverado with 245K miles gave me a fraction of the problems I've have with this truck. I don't have time to "swing by" the dealer every week or so to have my oil level monitored or to argue about whether or not its fair to expect that my seat heater or ac should last more than two calendar years. I'm thinking its time to punt.

P.s. my headlights fog up too

Buyer beware.....

Man.. you got a raw deal.

I know oil consumption was..er.."normal" for GMT-900s. I carried a qt of oil with me at all times in that truck because my valves would start ticking. I keep an eye on this one, especially that 0w oil they run. Seems like its almost running on water. Maybe thats why its consuming oil? Too thin? (mind you I'm no expert on oil weights..)

Ya it's pretty upsetting. I live in Indiana but work in Michigan. There is a dealer near my work that is more convenient that started the work on the seat but then it got beyond their capability so I went back to the Indiana dealership I bought it from (the Indiana service manager told me the Mich dealer failed to follow the instructions on the service bulletins). Had I not gone to the Michigan dealership, I could have utilized Indiana's lemon law for the multiple failed attempts to fix the seat.

I have to add that I really liked the truck and gave the dealer the opportunity to get the seat fixed and if that had been it you wouldn't be reading this now.

Your issues at 50,000 miles is why I won't own mine a tick over the 3 year, 36,000 mile mark. Actually, as soon as it's feasible financially to get out of my lease I'll be sending mine down the road. It's hard telling what I'll get to replace it, but it certainly won't be the 2014/2015 series of GM truck.

I assume at your price point you have the power seats. My truck has manual seats. I've heard a lot about seat issues, mainly the heated seats not working. I wonder why they have so much trouble with this feature? We've had heated seats in GM trucks since 99 at least.

I had to say, but most of people's issues start well before your 3 year/36,000 mile mark. Especially with vibrations that normally start well before the first oil change.

I'm a diehard GM guy, but it seems like it's hit or miss with these trucks. You either get a good one or have problem after problem from the get go. Some are lucky where they had 1 or 2 problems and they were quick easy first time fixes. So far I haven't had any issues with my '14 with about 12,500 miles on it.

Ah crap.. I just realized I hit my 3/36 this morning.

I've only had my truck since November. Oil pressure looks normal. I haven't been checking the amount but I dont hear any valve tapping or anything like that.

Truck doesn't vibrate. Even after I changed rims it rides smoother than my camaro did.

Mines stripped down compared to these caddillacs most of you are driving tho. manual non heated seats, no sensors in bumpers, I'd be interested to know if this issue occurs more in LTZ and SLT trucks than in SLE and LT trucks or if there's any sort of trim package coordination.Maybe a different gear ratio, rearend, driveshaft, something thats different from truck to truck that would explain why some get it and some dont.

Just hit 13K after about 13 months and no real problems, yet. Been changing oil and rotating tires too. It's a vehicle so I expect there will be problems sooner or later, but so far so good. Knock on wood

Dealership has had the truck for two days now. They determined that the AC compressor had an internal leak and they are replacing it. Seat cushion heating matt was also defective (this is the third one). Both issues are out of warranty, fortunately I purchased an extended warranty and will have a $100 deductible. As far as the oil consumption issue the dealer told me they have to do an oil change (even though it wasn't due) and I will have to stop at the dealership every 500 miles for them to check the oil level which means I'll have to go 30min out of my way on my morning commute once a week.

After owning a GMT-900 oil burner, I check it religiously on this truck. The first sign of it using oil I'm turning off AFM or buying the Range AFM Delete module. If that doesn't work, it's straight to a Toyota dealer. I'm done with GM if this thing starts burning oil.
