1994 sierra no crank

Recommended Posts

1994 GMC SIerra 142000

Had a battery that I was having to charge every couple of days. One day went out tried to go to work solenoid clicked several times leting me know to charge the battery. Charged the battery and went out to crank it up. When the key turned to run all lights stereo chime Fuel pump, worked. When the key turned to crank my radio and equalizer went off and the temp gauge jumped which normally happens when i crank the old boy up. However nothing else happened no solenoid click no noise whatso ever except for a small click that sounds like it is coming from a silver box under the dash. Silver box looks like possibly ecm.. but i didnt think 94 models had them. Pulled battery out swaped it for new one, pulled starter out and had it tested at oriellys, put in a new ignition switch. have not hooked a direct wire to the solenoid yet. have jumped the starter. checked all fuses and fuseable links both tested down to the starter. will not start in park or neutral and neutral safety switch seems operational. help

Check your ground wires and cables. Trace them carefully from the battery and starter. Make sure they are also in good shape. Any rust, corrosion or torn insulation on them is a sign the cable has broken and becoming weak. Whenever I'm working on older vehicles, I'm often amazed anything works with all the rust on the connections. I go all out and make sure there is ample metal to metal contact from the negative bat cable, to the washer, to the bolt, to the nut, to the frame/body. Clean it completely by light use of a grinder.

Same goes for the positive, but the temp gauge jump you talked about makes me thing poor grounding.
