resetting tps on silverado

i just replaced the tps on my 09 silverado and was wondering is there a procedure to reset the sensor so the computer can recnogize the new part

I think he was asking about the TPS not he TPMS. I could be wrong and that wouldn't be a first. Will have to wait for him to respond. I might have posted some wrong info if he was talking about a TPMS.

I never thought I'd see the day that we'd have to "teach" our vehicles how to idle, with a tool that cost more than most cars I drove back in the day ...

Good to see the price has finally come down. Back when I was having issues they couldn't be found under $400.

 

I probably should pick one up - I do quite a few tires here, and ones with TMPS are starting to make more and more appearances.

 

Just saw that Harbor Fright ... I mean Freight .... just started selling one of the high end wiz-bang copies of the $2k do-it-all scan tools for about half that price. I'm gonna hold off until I see some feedback on that brand. I'll let the guys that can afford it be the guinea pigs ...

If it were a small number of drivers not checking tire pressures I can understand being pissed at someone doing something about it. But, when it is the majority of drivers not checking pressures, and those same tires blow out, causing injuries in the ensuing crash, someone has to step up and do something.

Lots of evidence of what happens when tires are run at too low a pressure(most recently the Ford/Firestone combo) to convince the public that maybe someone needs to step in.

 

It would have been better if we all did what we were supposed to be doing all along, but, humans have this thing about being told what to do. Enthusiasts tend to perform "pre-flight" checks, too bad they are a very small minority of vehicles on the road.

 

Manufacturers could have stuck with the ABS monitoring rotation speed difference between wheels to detect pressure difference, but, that could not account for all tires being low. Tire pressures vary considerably where I am throughout the year. Air temp will go from -35C to +35C in under 5 months. Tire pressures are just like your blood pressure, by the time you let fate tell you about it, it is too late.

Sensors are not like new peripherals in a computer. PCM does not care if the sensor is new, all it sees is a voltage signal that it uses to make alterations. There should be a procedure in the repair manual that outlines how to set the base position for the sensor.

 

The reason it is important to understand the part about the PCM not caring iif it is a new part s to simply make it more productive for your searches in google on how to set the tps base voltage or whatever they call it.

I doubt that GM would pay for any thing now. The conditions for special coverage no longer exist. Like I mentioned before. In order to be covered by a special coverage program. The condition has to exist when you take the vehicle to the dealer. And a GM Tech has to verify that those conditions do exist.

good point Doug. The neglence of individuals affecting innocents. my solution is a bit more radical, the standards for getting a drivers license need to toughen up in hopes of prospective drivers having more respect before getting behind the wheel.

all the codes that i recieved was pointing at the sensor so thats why i replaced it. and how it does not make sense to ask if theses a way to reset the computer?

Throttle Position Sensor...

 

There is an idle learn procedure when the dealer puts them on that is done. If it seems to idle fine and run okay with the new sensor, leave it. If not, head down to the dealer and see if they can do an idle learn for you.

 

Also, if you were within time and mileage, this wouldn't have cost you a dime.

This damn system is a royal pain in the ass!

 

When I got my 1st set of aftermarket wheels back in '10, luckily my truck was still under warranty. I had tried and tried the procedure outlined in the manual - wasted 2 hours of my life trying and trying, thinking I was doing something wrong. NOPE - it's the way they designed this system. To get you into a dealership so they can put the vacuum to your wallet!

 

Strange how after that warranty visit to the dealer where they waved the magic $400 wand around the wheels, that the system actually allowed me to program a new set of wheels the next time I tried. That tells me that this was set up this way on purpose.

 

Either way, I wasn't pressing my luck. Since I got the new set of wheels programmed, I just deal with the tire light glaring in the dash for 4 months a year during winter months. I'll be damned if I ever attempt setting that stupid thing again. Yet another electronic system designed to bleed you of money ....

 

I picked up one of those wand things for $40 a few years ago. I figured my time just to do it once was worth more than $40. I get to use the wand twice a year.

The reason I asked was under certain condition GM Extended the warranty on the TPS of certain models. In order for GM to pay those conditions have to be present and verified by a dealer Tech when you take the vehicle to the dealer. And you didn't explain what your conditions were. You just said codes.

On some 2008-2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer; GMC Envoy; HUMMER H2; 2008-2011 Cadillac

Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban,

Tahoe; GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL; 2008-2010 HUMMER H3; 2009-2011 Chevrolet

Colorado; GMC Canyon; and 2009-2010 HUMMER H3T vehicles, equipped with a V8 engine, the

throttle position sensor may cause the engine to run rough and cause the malfunction indicator

lamp and/or an Engine Reduced Power message to illuminate. If this occurs, it could result in

reduced engine power.

SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000

miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in

service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to replace the throttle position sensor and reprogram the Engine Control Module. The

repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
