Newbie Questions for a Side by Side Purchase

Recommended Posts

This is my first tav/side by side. I need your help. The vehicle will be used mostly for 'work' around the land. Shuttling materials to build a few out buildings, hauling harvested timber etc. Top speed is not an issue for me. I think I have narrowed the search down to the Polaris 570 full size, XP 900 or the Gravely JSV. I like that fact all of these have bench seats so I can sit three for short rides. I think in terms of ability to to haul cargo the JSV is the one. It also has a Polaris engine and frame so I am not worried about durability. One of the downsides of the JSV is the clearance is 10 inches vs 12 for the Polaris. This vehicle will see duty almost exclusively on my property. No trail action. The property is rugged with steep inclines however, I don't think it would compare to what you would see in a trail park. How important is the 12 inch clearance vs 10? Also, any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I prefer the drive system of the Yamaha. I ride with lots of different bikes, and the yamaha system work great. The Yamaha viking can fit 3 full size adult across the seat. It all comes down to your choice. Also has lots of room for cargo.

Be sure and spend some time with net reviews on the Polaris. Sorry to say, but they often rank low in reliability and maintenance problems. I don't care if they may tow a bit more or have more ground clearance. Long term, trouble free ownership is the most important factor.

The wife and I love our Razors, But those are for speed and trails, I believe you would be more interested in the rangers they have beds on them for hauling ect, and a bench seat,

Honda is coming out this fall with a brand new SxS model. From what I read, its a game changer in the SxS world. 1000 cc 6 sp auto trans 2 cyl in-line engine etc etc.

Lots of discussion here---> http://www.prcforum.com/forum/17-ranger-discussions/61834-honda-just-changed-game-how-will-polaris-respond.html

Fully-Automatic 6-Speed DCT Transmission

The Pioneer 1000-5’s Automatic DCT transmission features paddle shifting, six forward speeds plus reverse, three shift modes (automatic, manual and sport )and two gearing ranges (high and low). It can do all the shifting for you, as smooth and seamless as any automatic, but can also give you total control to shift yourself—it’s the best of all worlds!

Mine is primarily a work UTV. I am using a John Deere 825i. While it can be pretty sporty in the rough, it also has one of biggest variety of aftermarket stuff that can be used on it. Even up to full blown hydraulic 3 pt Cat 1 hitches that not only have 800 lb of lift, but also 800 lb of down pressure! And the 3 point hitch can be mounted on front or back! And it is not permanent. Can remove it in a short time if one needed to. Will tow just about anything, and one can even put a typical large round bale of hay in the back (with the box sides down) and haul it, though I will admit, that is really pressing the edge of the envelope. It is a real workhorse in every sense of the word. I typically take some pretty steep sided farm terraces frequently, and it walks them like they aren't even there. Parts can be had just about anywhere, online or dealers. Working on it for typical oil change, greasing, servicing type of maintenance is straightforward and easy. I have seen some use the 825i to even move large cabin boats at a marina and put them in the water. I came across a video recently of a guy using an 825i to move a twin axle trailer with a bobcat skid steer loader on it up a hill on loose, muddy ground. 2" receivers for hitches, front and back, standard. 812cc inline 3 cylinder, DOHC, 12 valves, fuel injection, 50 hp. 16.4 cubic feet of box on the back. 45 mph top end. Diesel version if that trips your trigger.

I have the bench seat version.

I never thought of getting a UTV this way, but I just picked up a John Deer XUV 825i, loaded, at a very good price because it was a demo unit. The dealer had a bunch of 825i's that had been demo units at the state fair and some that were loaners to school districts for the cross country track teams.

825i that was a loaner to a school district south of me, with 40 hrs on it, full new warranty, extended warranty, full service before delivery, 5 days to use it to see if I like it before we made the deal, power lift box, full front, rear, and side protection, CV guards fore and aft, larger spoke rims with Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires, and dealer installed snow plow, windshield with full soft cab, cab heater for me,.... all for final price of $18K.

Check dealer, irregardless of brand, for possible demo or loaner units. You just might be able to pull off a really good deal.

I have the Yamaha Viking with a custom working bed built by Superior Outdoor Products in Superior Nebraska. Mine is a work rig. On farm using it to spray weeds, haul me all over, use it when cutting trees and firewood, hauling all manner of stuff. And I love it so far. I do wish the suspension was a bit stiffer but understand they also have to ride well..it does.

I went with the RZR 570. I like it a lot. I use it more for work than trail riding. When I was at the dealer, I had no intention of buying a RZR. I was interested in the Full Size Ranger He suggested I try the RZR. A RZR never crossed my mind. I associated it with trail riding more than work.

I am glad I bought the RZR instead of a Ranger or something of similar size. Portions of my property are heavily wooded with little room to maneuver. RZR helps me get around easier. It handles small cargo trailers and trail mowers well. I have had a lot of weight in the small bed and it handled it well. When I want to rip around, I can use it for that as well. If I had some more cash, I would buy something with a bigger bed, and more power but that is not happening now. One complaint is I have trouble getting in an out of it. I think this has to do with the fact, the seats are sort of close to the wheel. It has not let me down in any way.
