Traded Up

Recommended Posts

We sold our fifth-wheel RV a couple of years ago, and at the time, really didn't think we'd ever have another trailer, so I sold my heavy duty truck and eventually ended up with a 2014 GMC 1500 All Terrain. Then the wife wanted to get back to camping, so we picked up a 2014 Premier travel trailer.

I was very careful about all of the weights to make sure I was within the limits, and this trailer is, but only just. There wasn't a lot of margin. The 1500 towed pretty well at up to about 55, but on the freeway at 65, it was a handful. The 1500 already has a very floaty front end, but it was really magnified while towing. I've never felt a truck get moved from side to side so much. I just didn't feel comfortable towing down the highway.

So, I told the wife, we needed to upgrade. I finally got the truck that I've always wanted. It's a 2015 Denali HD (2500). I couldn't be happier. Even if I weren't towing anything, I'd rather drive this truck. It just handles so much better. It doesn't have that floaty feeling, it's very stable. It's especially nice having the extra safety margins. Obviously the difference in towing is night and day.

The best news of all is that I made it home from the dealership without incident ;) http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/161919-new-member-with-a-sad-tale/

Thanks all.

As for the side to side, nearly nonexistent. It was a really strange sensation in the 1500. It sort of felt like the dog wagging the tail. Again, this really only seemed to happen at 60-65 on the freeway. Don't get me wrong, with a smaller trailer/load, the 1500 was a great truck, with the exception of the floaty front suspension. I was seriously considering Bilsteins to try and help the floaty feeling. That's probably the biggest difference in the way these two drive.

Beautiful Truck. Love that Brownstone color. Congratulations, you bought the best HD diesel on the market.

I hated this color when it first came out, but it's really growing on me. Glad to see you upgrade. I always shake my head when I see these massive campers or bobcats with halftons. when I pull my 28ft enclosed loaded up even the 2500 I had felt like it was moving around way to much. now with my 3500 I have yet to feel the same no matter the cross wind.

Nice...

Yes, that's allot of Camper for a 1500 Just dealing with the wind on the big ones is a pain.

Glad you decided to upgrade rather than run the risk.

I've seen a few camper and trucks laying on there sides over the years.

Just from the wind hauling them over.

I only towed it the once from the rv dealership, about 3 hours away. It was enough for me to know it was too close to be comfortable towing. I would have gotten a 3500 HD, but there weren't any configured in a standard box at my local dealers, they all came with the long box, which I didn't really need.
