Power Steering stopped and brakes barely worked

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4X4, 6.0 liter automatic.

I replaced the power steering pump last week.

Today I was making a right hand turn and there was a strong bump, as if I had hit a curb (there was not curbs) and the truck lost power steering and almost the brakes.

Did the shaft break in the new power steering pump? (I used a puller/install tool on the pulley)

I am at a loss to know what happened, except for a broken pulley shaft, is this as a possibility.

Sounds like you have to lift the hood and see what happened.

Maybe one of the lines blew, or just came off [maybe wasn't tightened enough?]. Maybe take off the belt and see what kind of effort it takes to turn the PS pump. Maybe you just got a faulty pump.

Dave,

Opening the hood was the first thing I did when it stopped working.

It became very clear when I pulled a dropper full of fluid out of the reservoir, it was as dark as 4,000 motor oil after only 67 miles.

The steering pump shaft was broke.

This time I included a filter on both return lines just in case after purging the lines there was any metel shavings left it, so they'd not get to the pump.

Thanks for your reply!
