Oil catch can for 2015 6.0

Hello all,

 

Just traded back up to a 2500 from my 2014 1500. Liked the 1500 but never had a "love" for it. Went back to an HD in a 2015 CC Z71 6.0. LOVE this truck. BTW, I had a Duramax before trading it to the 1500 5.3 and didn't want the added to cost of keeping the diesel on the road so thought I'd try the 6.0. Love it so far.

 

Anyway, I snatched my RX catch can off my 1500 5.3 before trading it in and slapped it on my 6.0 at about 130 miles. Knowing the PCV oil/moisture routing back through the 6.0 intake might not be as big a problem as with the 5.3 with the V4 mode stuff, but decided I would see what all it would catch on the 6.0.

 

Drove maybe 100 miles (some of which was with a decent load of a 20' heavy built car hauler with a SXS) and decided to see if I caught anything at all one night while in the garage. I thought "no way did it catch much more than a drop at 100 miles". To my surprise I caught as much if not more than I would have in my 5.3 at 1000 miles.

 

Anyone else have any experiences like this with the 6.0? Is there any downside I do not know about to catching this oil/moisture mixture and not letting it route through the system as designed? If so, I will take it back to stock.

 

I have hopefully attached a pic of what the can caught.

Awesome experiment.

 

I have no idea where my PCV is even located...seriously. is yours plumbed between the PCV and IM? Or Intake?

 

I have a nice one with an internal bafflw kicking around, I'd love to try it out and see what I get.

The line I spliced into runs from the very rear of the driver's side valve cover to the center of the intake. all I had to do with my RX can kit to install was to cut out a 4" to 5" section out of the stock line and push the correct lines that came with the can onto the ends of the stock lines for a nice neat look. Mounted the can in the same place as was on my 1500 5.3...right on the side of the brake master cylinder.

 

If you try your can, let me know if you get near the amount I did in about 100 miles of driving.

So, your OCC is only inline with the PCV? Where is it getting a vacuum source from?

yep. that's how it works. Vacuum comes from the airflow going through the intake I am assuming.

 

I cant believe no one else has any comments on this. Must not be that big of a deal to leave the 6.0 alone.

I took the catch can off my 2013 1500 5.3L and put it on my 2015 2500 6.0L as well. Not quite as much gunk as the 5.3L spit thru the PCV line, but more than enough to justify doing the install. I have never seen the downside to using one of these setups. Might not be as critical with some motors, each person will have to judge that. I have no interest in removing the catch can from my 6.0L. It will sit right there and do the job it is intended to do. Getting just under 1 oz oil per 1000 miles, almost exactly matching the oil consumption of the motor.

 

As for the PCV setup and installing, it was a carbon copy of install on the 2013 5.3L I had. I installed the exact same way with no changes at all.

I just bought a used 2015 2500HD. I don't see too much on people putting these on the 6.0. Is this still something that most would recommend? It has 22,000 miles on it already so I'd like to throw it in there if the consensus is that this is a good idea?

 

What brand/model would you suggest? Possibly a link?

Same one I am running. I took it a step further though. I had the High Efficiency CP can on, then a friend traded in his pickup and gave me a standard CP can. So I hooked them up in series... the regular can then the HE can. The regular one grabs quite a bit, but what it misses, the HE can captures.

You really dont need to run a catch can unless you do a lot of towing- ie. high vacuum levels because of engine load. The LS is about average for oil consumption. I use Mobil 1 sythethic or Pennzoil synthetic, the best IMHO.

I guess it depends on what one is trying to accomplish. I rarely tow, and then it is very light. I mostly haul which is the reason I got a 2500. But as to whether someone likes about 4 oz of crud going back into their intake over a 4000-5000 mile interval even under normal non towing conditions, I guess each person has to decide for themselves. I catch that much junk in the form of oil, blow by deposits, condensation, etc I would rather it not go back into the intake and increase risks of deposits building up on valves and combustion chambers. But to each his own.

Towing would cause the least amount of blow by as the motor will be running at full engine temp over a long period of time, it is non towing, cold starts, short trips that cause a lot of "milk" in the oil.

Hey guys, I know this is an older topic but after running a Catch Can in my wife's Hemi and seeing how much crap it catches I want to install one on my 6.0L. Does anyone have any pictures of the install or info on the catch can your running? Is there any companies that make one specifically for the GM 6.0L pickups?
