We recently reported on GM's new push to add in-car connectivity to all its vehicles via the 4G LTE WiFi it is now installing. GM is now leading the industry by using its vehicles' sensors to send important information to customers. GM announced today that new Tahoe and Suburban owners who opt for the Theft Protection Package can opt to receive real-time theft alerts if their vehicle's glass is broken or the alarm sounded. The system also has internal sensors that detect theft by towing using inclination and other sensors.

On Star already had the ability to work with police to track a stolen GM vehicle using GPS information. However, the new WiFi data link is 100 times faster than prior On Star telematics systems. Police and On Star can even slow a stolen vehicle. Those customers that choose to receive alerts can get them via text, phone or e-mail.

Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing commented on the new capabilities, saying, “Prompt response and quick awareness of theft situations give customers a greater chance to recover stolen property. By leveraging the connection that OnStar provides, Chevrolet owners can remain in contact with their vehicle, even when it is out of sight.”
