General Motors has released sales numbers for June and the results are mixed. On one hand, truck and crossover sales are clearly pushing the company forward. On the other, car sales, especially those at Buick and Cadillac are starting to drop off.

During the month of June, which included 25 selling days, the company as a whole sold 259,353 vehicles in the US. That's down 3.0% from last June but up 3.4% year over year. A large chunk of those lost sales comes from a lagging fleet market. Rental company sales were down considerably, but purposefully, according to the company.

Strong sales by the Buick Encore (up 33.4% vs last June), Cadillac SRX (up 23.5% over last June), Silverado (up 18.4% in June and 14.6% YOY) and Sierra (up 20.8% in June and 8.2% YOY) helped fill the gaps left by weak sales in other areas.

The Chevrolet Impala (down 41.5% in June), Cadillac CTS (down 29.4% in June and 39.5% YOY) are among the biggest sales losers. Surprisingly, the new Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon XL are also lagging, down 44%, 54%, and 22.3% respectively compared to last June.

June 2015 / 2015 YTD Sales Per Brand

  • Chevrolet : 181,256 / 1,053.619
  • GMC: 47,051 / 264,713
  • Buick: 17,531 / 106,314
  • Cadillac: 13,353 / 80,899

I am willing to bet the pricing of some of the lagging vehicles is to blame. They just want too much for a new Tahoe, Yukon, etc.

That's what stood out to me as well. The Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, CTS... all vehicles that saw massive price increases recently. I guess we're seeing how well that worked out.

Exactly, when a 1LT 2wd Tahoe pushes almost 60k, it has to hurt sales numbers.

Early on a giant percentage of the SUV sales were fleet. The big SUVs don't get rented nearly as often as the small cars and likely stay in the fleet longer so I'm sure that initial buying spree has leveled off. I want to say that I saw like 75% of the Suburban/Yukon XLs were fleet sales.

Personally I am not a fan of the redesign of the Yukon, Suburban & Tahoe, just too boxy, and expensive. The Escalade is the only one out of the bunch that I think really hit the mark for design, the Tahoe/Suburban is the most homely out of the three IMHO.

We have a winner.

GM sells a decent percentage of Tahoe's and Suburban's to rental fleets. GM's rental deliveries were down 45% this month as planned. GM is trying to get further and further away from rental sales and focus more on retail and commercial where they can command higher transaction prices.

I've been waiting to hear about the new Buick Mid Sized SUV, but so far nothing.... Looking heavily at a Ford Edge now. GM's picked up a lot over the past few years, but they still have a long way to go.

See the difference between taking the GM press release as is and actually researching what the results are? The company will always put the most positive spin on it possible.

does anyone have numbers on the Half ton sales ?

Just wanting to know what the F150 VS GM 1500 TWINS are matching up .

I know the 2500 and 3500 ford dominates but I havent seen anything from the 1500's

Love the new Impala (since 2014). No wonder Buick & Caddy car sales have slumped.

Like the Chevy Malibu too, but just wouldn't want a full-size car and only a I4 or V6 engine choice...

I've never been able to find them broken down on my own. Pickuptrucks.com used to do a detailed summary of the previous year in the spring but they never did it for MY 2014.

If a company made 100 models, and 99 models had sales drop 100%, and the 1 remaining model had sales rise 1%, the PR headline would read

" _____ defys market downturn with rise in sales of ____ "
