2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 Electrical

Recommended Posts

I have a 08 Silverado LTZ that is experiencing some weird electrical issues. When driving down the road I will see a sudden drop from 14+ volts to just above 9 Volts on my battery gauge. Then if I take my foot off the gas and to the break, my touchscreen will shut off and restart and once in awhile my Odometer will flash. When this happens, if I use my turn signals the radio and gauges will act up again. When this is happening, if I shut the truck off, it will not start right away. When I turn the key, nothing will happen. If it sits long enough it will just magically have power again or if I remove the negative battery cable and wait for about 15 min and put it back on I will have power again as well. I have checked the battery posts and connections on the cables and there is no corrosion.

I had the system load tested today at an Auto parts store. The reading on the battery was great. The reading on the Alternator came in just a little low - 13 something but nothing to worry about I don't think. I have replaced the 175 mega fuse already and getting ready to replace the alternator just in case ( maybe a voltage regulator problem?). Its a 145 amp alternator. Is there anyone else who have had these problems and been able to fix it? I have had the truck into a GM dealer and they couldn't tell me what it was because they were unable to replicate the issue happening. Also just this morning when I shut it off and tried to start it again the gauges looked like they were bouncing really fast and the truck was not turning on.

It has been happening more and more lately and I am tired of turning the truck off and being stranded! Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks!

I had the exact same problem with my 08 ltz months after purchase took for service ! they did a software update and the no start symptoms were gone but the fluctuating volt gauge problem wasn't as extreme but it still fluctuated between 11v - 14v at times

still have the truck and it hasnt gave me any issues

I also upgraded my battery

to a AGM Northstar which improved it

I think some fluctuation is normal.

When you checked your connections did you actually take them off and cleaned them?

Also check your ground connections. But not only by looking at. Take them off and clean them.

I've noticed my 2013 Sierra alt fluctuating from about 11.5-14. It will run at 11-12 volts for a long time and then run up to 14 for a few minutes and then back down in the 12 range again.

I'm wondering it is just normal for these vehicles? Has not caused any problems but never have had one that did that before.
