Not happy with the 26Gal gas tank need HELP!

Recommended Posts

I would be thankful to anyone who could help me figure out how to get more fuel capacity on a 2015 Chevy 1500 4 door 6.6 box. I know the 2 door models had the option of a 34 gal tank but i having a very hard time finding anything for the truck I own. I tow a light camper and am usually with a family member with a motor home with a 1800 mile range so stopping every 250 or so miles is getting really annoying. Also yes I would have loved to get a 2500HD but it just didn't happen so im trying to make the best with what I have.

You can buy an auxiliary tank to mount in the bed.

Personally the 26 gallon tank is good. Even my last truck (98 1500 ext cab) was also the 26 gallon tank. Stopping isn't a bad thing. Gives you time to use the bathroom, grab something to eat or snack on and also lets you stretch your legs. I can go a good 5 hours without needing or wanting to stop so on a long trip it works out pretty good.

Thanks for the response! I have been looking for a approved way to mount a aux tank but cant find one. even if I could get a 400 mile range when towing that would be great. Normally all the women ride in the prevost so they can stretch and use the bath room as they wish. I on the other hand don't need to stop but every 400 miles and asking everyone and the the bus pulling a trailer to stop so I can get gas every 250 miles is a bit annoying.

I looked into this a while back.

Apparently, there is no way to have an aux tank fill into the main tank automatically to truly extend range between stops. The truck will sense that is is full too long and throw a code. So, you have to stop and pump from the extra tank into the main tank, which is not much better than stopping at a gas station most of the time.

There are safety issues that diesel fuel systems don't have too.

That is what I have been finding. Do you know if it would code if it was not a gravity fed system but a pump transfer system? maybe being able to turn it on for a little at a time while driving?

Or does anyone know of any custom tank makers that could make a bigger tank for the truck? Thanks everyone for any help, answers, ideas, or even just saying something wont work is helpful too!!!

Maybe look into doing a setup like they used to do with older trucks. Basically have it setup for 2 fuel tanks and switch when one starts to get low. Back in high school a friend had a Ford F150 with dual tanks. Just set up the extra tank like that. Could also just not fill up the factory tank to 100%, maybe 90 and maybe it won't throw a code. But, of course with all of the computers and sensors it may not be as easy as it would have been 20 years ago.

I think a system like that would work well, in theory. In practice, it would take a lot of money to install all that you will need to make that kind of thing work seamlessly. A bung installed in the top of the tank and a gasoline hose connecting it to a tank in the bed, with a submersible gas (maybe even a regular fuel pump could be adapted) pump in the bottom of it, controlled by a nice relay and switch. If the proper venting can be had, it should work.

This is what i have been looking at if I cant find a bigger tank to replace the oem tank. Its just a question of it being safe and not making the truck toss codes all the time.

So youre telling me my truck will throw a code if i refill it without shutting it off after driving through a full tank cause its been running too long?

Please explain.

What I think they're saying is that if you hook an aux tank up to where it basically runs into the factory tank then the gas gauge and computer will show full for a long time and may throw a code.

That's why I said earlier that maybe the only way it would work without throwing a code is setting it up like they used to a few years ago with dual tanks where you have to turn one off and turn the other one. They each have their own pump and sending unit I believe.

It would be nice if we could just mount and plumb in a second tank in the bed and have it fill the tank all the time through a direct pipe. That way, just fill the top tank when both are near empty and move on.

Won't work. The computers won't like the idea of the gas gauge never moving until the top tank is empty, as well as it cannot calculate range or mpg that way.

What i would like to do is have the aux tank on a switch. When your at 1/4 tank turn the pump on fill to 3/4 then do it as needed. then you never risk overfilling the main tank or messing up sensors. just dont know the best way to do it.

i like this unit http://www.handyindustries.com/products/ft-30-truck-fuel-and-tool-box-combination
