MyLink/IntelliLink Updates

Recommended Posts

A few old threads on this forum touched on it but I find it hard to believe there aren't any further developments.

How do I know when there is an update or if I have the latest version? I've pulled up the developers menu that lists all my version numbers but how do I know if it's the latest?

I hate to think this is one of those things where they won't update it unless you have a complaint. I'm sure a few of you will respond that updates can be found in TSBs. So my followup is has anyone found a way to access all TSBs for the truck?

Also, from everything I read the MyLink/IntelliLink system is opensource which should mean developers and modders can play with the code. Is there a database or any site where people have created their own builds for us to download?

Thanks for your responses in advance!

In for updated info on this!

I would love if we got an updated display of some sort, I wouldn't even mind paying for some if they were developed by third parties and didn't void warranty in some way.

Good Evening Blair,

Thank you for picking up on my inquiry. I just got off the phone with the a representative from the number you've provided. The rep said the MyLink unit is capable of accepting updates but only when there is an issue/bug that can be identified and rectified by an available update. He said the Navigation maps will usually come out yearly, are at the expense of the consumer and are available for customers to do it themselves.

He was extremely courteous and I will definitely contact that number again if I have any further questions. Just a little disappointed that new features will not be added to what I currently have.

The next model year of the Silverado is expected to have Apple CarPlay. Since the hardware I have is capable of running it, it's a shame I won't be getting it. I bought mine in May 2015 and now I feel like I'm being punished for buying one of your vehicles a few months too early.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my truck. Just wish the software that came with it wasn't considered obsolete with the release of the new one in September.

Thanks again!

I would not assume just because you have a 2015 you will be able to get the carplay. Example, the 2014 didn't get the text messaging feature the 2015's got. That update is not backwards compatible at all, no way no how. There was wiring, hardware and software changes made from 2014 to 2015.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. Just wish you weren't. [emoji4]

  • 1 month later...

My previous two vehicles were a Ford F-150 with Sync and a Jeep Grand Cherokee with Uconnect. Both provided updates that could be installed by the consumer. Updates weren't released very frequently, but at least they were available to correct issues and add features.

That was Ford, this is GM and the infotainment system is not setup to operate like that. All updates have to be done thru the dealer on this system.

As TJay said, updates are only available for specific issues and depend on both hardware AND software versions installed. To help with reception issues, TJay worked with the GM engineers to duplicate the issue and test solutions. It took a while for the "calibration" to be released because it involved both hardware and software. I was amazed at how many different hardware part numbers there were in just the 2014 model year and once my hardware was replaced, there was a software update for that hardware version. The dealer tech had to plug into my truck, gather the current module information along with my VIN to determine what it needed. He ordered the hardware and then updated the software. There simply is not a table that I could look at to determine this. Certainly not as simple as my 1999 Silverado where they all had a single deck that contained everything.

And the hardware is different in the 2015 and 2016 models too! So I can't just put the 2016 "head unit" in my 2014. It's all a different world now...

I buy an $80 Garmin and get lifetime updates for the maps. I buy a $50,000 truck and have to pay more than the cost of a Garmin for an update. Sometimes I feel like a fool!!!!!

You are not alone...and it's not as user friendly as my iPhone maps...many auto manufacturers follow this process, though...not agreeing with the policy, just sayin'...

That's why I didn't bother with the Nav system. I use my I phone or iPad for maps and if I need real directions for some reason I just call onstar for turn by turn. Learn my lesson with GM Nav systems on my Avalanche and realized I just don't need such an option, because I never used it anyways.

Does anyone have clear description of what functionality will be coming in the 2016 intellilink. Being the way technology goes these days I want the best integration with my phone for ease of use and to offload the "latest software" scenario on to the phone so we don't have to buy a new truck every year. Maybe even android tablet connection capability.

I would like to buy a new 2015 truck right now, but am not sure if I should be waiting for the 2016 to get the enhanced functionality. Which also brings the question of when the 2016 will start shipping and if they will start the year with the new technology or will hold up delivery or be added only to trucks later in the year.

Everything comes at a price. If you're willing to wait and buy the 2016, REGARDLESS of what it brings to the table, you could be spending up to $10,000 for that functionality. Think about it - 20% off on some of the GMC's would mean a $10k price difference just to get Car Play (as an example). You think it's ridiculous to pay $200 for updated maps? :)
