Exhaust Fire

Saw this in Another Forum.

Driver was sitting parked Idling the truck. Next thing he know someones yelling his trucks on fire.

The temps it takes to clean out the DPFs on this new trucks doesn't look safe for that plastic step in bumper.

Maybe he shouldn't have put the tip so close to the plastic...... That doesn't look factory so it's hard to blame GM for that.

I know it's diesel, I just thought factory tips were a lot lower away from the bumper. At least that's what I've always seen, maybe they changed it.

I honestly don't know then. This is the first I've heard of the corner step catching fire. You just don't normally see a diesel exhaust tip that close to anything from the factory so that's why I figured it wasn't stock. Maybe since I haven't heard of this happening until this instance then maybe it was a freak incident type thing and won't be a continuing problem to put out a recall.

If I was in charge a recall would defently be issued.

That exhaust goes up to 1250 degrees when the exhaust filter is cleaning itself.

The factory tips are pretty close but I never thought of it till now. Here is a picture of mine. I bet there will be a program change due to this or relocating the exhaust lower. On the 11 LML that I had if it Idled for more than just a minute (not sure on the exact time) the regen would stop. Not so on the 15.5 (mine anyway), I saw it stay in regen for ~10min while idling before I got to get back going due to a wreck once.

I say just relocate the tip to it's on the side between the step and rear wheel. Somewhere similar to where I have both of my tips which is at 45° behind the rear wheels, maybe a little further back.

Ok truck is at dealership. Got to love the service guy. Couldn't call it a fire. Said it was a thermal event. GM won't let them use the word fire LOL.

Will keep everyone posted as I get info.

Technically not a fire, but "thermal event" is getting into the bounds of ridiculous.

In terms of things getting torched by hot exhaust, a bumper is the least expensive thing to fix and it's covered under warranty for the next few years. I certainly wouldn't reroute the exhaust until there's a programming fix. If it's hot enough to torch the plastic on the bumper, it's hot enough to degrade the paint on the bed of the truck.
