Wiper/Washer doesn't always work

fljab

Question

Hello,

I have an intermittent problem that I can't find the source.

On my integrated wiper/washer/cruise/turn "stalk" coming off the steering column. Sometimes the wipers don't work including the washer. It does not affect cruise or turn signals.

When it first did it, I checked the fuse, it looked fine but I went ahead and replaced it anyway and the problem went away. Since then it still does it sometimes and I can't find a common cause (like cycling the key on/off). I've even been going down the road jiggling the wires underneath the column and the stalk inself and nothing makes it work.

And then, "VOILA!" they work again! I've been keeping the windshield coated with Rain-X because I can't rely on the wipers working when I need them, but ya just never know.

Any ideas what to check?

This is a new to me '93 GMC K1500.

I have some other control quirks I'm working through:

> Radio doesn't work; I've tracked it to a blown CDM. In the process of going aftermarket as my efforts to have mine repaired or find a replacement has not been successful.

> Heater/AC controls. Mostly the fan control won't change when you need it, but seems to be OK after driving it awhile. I've learned to leave the AC on full (I live in Florida) and then run it down to medium when it lets me. The temp. AC on/off, recirc, and zone controls seem to mostly work, altho on rare occasions one or all of them don't work either. My plan here was to replace the fan switch (and is there a resistor?) and see if that helps.

But, I'd really like to have the wiper to work when I need it!

Thanks for your attention.

That multifunction switch was a collosal turd when it was new - my money is on that. They're not cheap, and boy are they FUN to install ... :nonod:

As for the HVAC system, if it were mine I'd just wire it old school - a couple toggle switches to control the fan speed, and an old choke cable to control the vents. Sayonara electronics, hello reliability.

For the wiper problem I'll bet it's the circuit board on the wiper motor, common problem on GMT400s.I've replaced the one on wifey's suburban and just recently bought one for my suburban, gonna be replacing it today.Got both from Dorman(p/n 906-136).

Search YT for chevy wiper motor pulse board.

For the fan speed another common problem....blower motor resistor,it controls all the lower fan speeds by reducing the voltage going to the blower motor.A ''high'' setting on the fan speed knob sends 12 volts to the blower motor the resistor reduces the voltage a little each time you turn the knob to a lower speed.

Not sure on a '93 but on my '95 I replaced the HVAC control module due to the A/C not coming when switched to it(the little light wouldn't come on on the A/C button).

Thanks! I just looked on Advance Auto, and they have 5 choices, most in the $20 range. That's what I'll try.

Appreciate the good info!

You're welcome,glad to help.Also you'll find it's a very easy fix,maybe 15 minutes

One more note...I went to a Pick-A-Part and got one from a GMT400 pickup and put it on,it worked for a year or so then I got a new one...problem solved :)

Oh yeah, did that on the S10 Blazer - forgot all about it! Wipers wouldn't park, and lost low speed. The board fixed it - was about $30 on the net somewhere. I think the multifunction switch replacement was because I lost high beams. Done so much friggin work to that thing it's tough to keep track of it all.

Probably have 10,000 hours of labor into that thing ... and I still need to R&R the front diff, wheel cylinders (and shoes, springs, turn drums), and caulk all the rot holes ... :shakehead:
