Silly Cummins

Recommended Posts

I don't know too many details about this Dodge that wanted to play but here's what I've got:

Debadged, aftermarket steel winch bumper, lift (5"?), oversized mud tires and a tune (based on the smoke)

He fought to catch up to me in traffic and we ended up side by side at a couple of lights. In each case by the time I hit the top of second gear he was easily one length behind and falling fast. Side note: pull was only to 60

LOL! Nice.

I know a few RAM fanboys and they always brag about the torque. But it is still the slowest of the 3 being an inline 6.

Duramax + Allison = Winning Combination!

I don't care for any of the pickup diesel motors, but of diesels I do own, I am more fond of inlines than V motors. There is a good reason that V diesels had a very short foray into the heavy truck market. They just weren't nearly as good as inlines at doing real work, reliability, and durability. And while I used to like the Cummins products and had great results with them, since I got burned pretty bad on that last two Cummins I had, I will not allow anything I drive to have a Cummins in it. If I had no other choice but to get a diesel in a pickup, I would be quite fine with the Dmax and the Allison. So, I guess that leaves only one choice for me... GM. If I could justify getting one, I would buy a new Colorado with the 2.8L diesel. I had a very similar motor in the past, and it was great. That would be a ultimate daily driver pickup. I don't have a need for a daily driver in any vehicle. One of the advantages of owning my own business and not having to drive to work!

Ya inline 6s are just better for pulling. That's why all 18 wheelers have inline 6s and not V8s. I've never owned a diesel pickup, but I've tried out trucking and done local delivery and there's a reason heavy commercial trucks these days have inline 6s. I'd rather have a diesel that's better for pulling than one that's faster. If I had to buy a diesel pickup primarily for towing then I would get a Ram Cummins while if I had to buy a diesel that was also a Daily then I would get the Duramax.

What happened with the two Cummins that you had?

Cams and EGR issues. Kinda sad. I am not the only one who has had issues with the ISX motors since they came about. I previously used N-14's, which the ISX replaced. Now those N-14's were killer motors. Just about the best motor Cummins ever put out. But Cummins is also so proud of their motors, that they make sure you know it when you buy parts or gets repairs. Well, several thousands of dollars later, and I finally cut the ties to Cummins. I took my last N-14 to 1.4 million miles without a major repair. Only one injector and an accessory drive seal. Previous N-14 similar results. 1st ISX couldn't make it to 100,000 miles before the issues started happening. The second ISX, Cams, turbos, EGR valves and cooler. Nope. No more. Cummins can take a long walk off a short pier.
