GMPP Exhaust System by Borla rusted through!

Recommended Posts

I ordered my 2008 Silverado in August of 2007. Before it even left the lot I had my GM dealer install a GMPP Performance Exhaust System made by Borla. I have been pleased with this system for its entire life up until this past month. I heard a tingy-vibrating noise from underneath during certain resonant frequencies of the motor. Then it got to the point where when I slammed the door or went over a bump that the tingy sound became a rattle. I recently rolled under the truck to find that my stainless steel GMPP system had rusted though! I am very surprised by this, as I thought that Borla systems had a lifetime warranty. Is this something that GM should cover? I have this part on my original vehicle invoice but I am out of warranty on my truck. Any thoughts? Has anyone else had this issue? I have attached some pictures for reference. I should also note that it rusted through downstream of the muffler. Upstream of the muffler the clamp is cracked and looks like it's ready to break off any day now.

The most current information on that system states:

Warranty: Materials, The greater of either the balance of the vehicle's bumper to bumper warranty or 12 months / 12,000 miles., Manufacturer

I'd check any paperwork you have from the original install and see if it is under any other warranty possibly. As it shows now, it looks like that when the GMPP systems were made they had a GM warranty not a Borla warranty. I know that the Borla GM on the new K2 trucks, it is not a GM warranty but is a Borla warranty.

Thanks for your reply. I contacted GM and Borla separately yesterday but no responses yet. This is really disappointing. An autsenitic stainless steel system should NOT rust out that quickly, especially with how I baby my truck. It only has 60k miles on it! I searched the web for a couple hours and could not find any similar issues to mine anywhere so I don't know why my system would have rotted out like this? I'll reply back here when I hear back from Borla and/or GM.

That's surprising. I have the same exhaust on my 08 v-Max and it hasn't had any issues. It seems you may have gotten a defective part? Sometimes they do make it past QC because this is not normal for Borla products. It should definitely be covered and Borla actually still offers the GMPP muffler through their website. From dealing with Borla in the past, they may send you an new complete cat back after seeing what happened.

I had a rattle issue with mine and had an email answer from Borla within two hours. They replaced it with no problem. I had to pay the $40 bucks or so to have the new one welded in. They even paid to have the old one sent in for R&D. Hope they take care of you. I had no issues.

Borla has excellent customer service. Are you sure you sent them a message using the correct email address? They have always responded rather quickly when I had a question.

Give them a call, something didn't work out with that email.

So I contacted GM Canada last week and Borla separately (both a week ago today). GM Canada was the first to get back to me, and the customer service lady "Sue" on the phone was very friendly and wanted to help. She said she would look into my GMPP exhaust system issue after the weekend (she called me on Saturday!) and give me a call back. I never got a call back from her or received an update after the weekend, even after giving her a call to ask for an update.

When I contacted Borla last Friday it was pretty much a shot in the dark at trying to get resolution. Surprisingly, I got an email response from Steve Williams at Borla first thing Monday morning. Steve simply replied and said that he has processed my order and they have immediately shipped the replacement parts. I have never in my life received such exemplary customer service. He never gave me the fifth degree or asked me a million questions.

Tonight when I got home from work low and behold is my replacement muffler as promised (pics below). I am so happy that Borla went the extra mile to make this situation right. I will definately be putting a Borla exhaust on my new K2 when I get it. I googled Steve and Borla customer service and found that I am not the first to be treated so well by Borla. I'm glad there are still personable companies out there that stand behind their product!

I said, all you have to do is give them a call and speak with someone. I have delt with Borla several times and they are always great.

Nice to see your opinion change from the last couple of posts. I knew Borla would take care of the issue. Borla customer service is second to none, glad you got it worked out!
